ATHERTON, CA – The Jessup University women's basketball (0-2, 0-0 PacWest) team faced a tough outing on Saturday afternoon, falling to Cal State Monterey Bay at PacWest Challenge, 40-53.
The Warriors held an advantage early as they ended the first quarter ahead, 11-7. Jessup replicated their successful first quarter outsourcing the Otters by eight in the second quarter and went into half, 25-13.
Coming out of the break, the third quarter proved difficult for the Warriors. Jessup netted just seven points in the frame while the Otters found success on offense, flipping the script, 32-34. Monterey Bay carried their momentum in the final frame and took the victory, 40-53.
Overall, the Warriors faced challenges in generating consistent offense, shooting 37.3% from the field (19-for-51) and struggling from beyond the arc, hitting just one of 15 attempts (6.7%). Ball security was also an issue, as the team committed 21 turnovers throughout the contest. However, Jessup held a solid rebounding margin, pulling down 37 boards, and demonstrated hustle on defense with nine total steals.
Despite the difficult result, several Warriors delivered strong individual performances. Porter Wood led the team in both scoring with 11-points and rebounds with 9. Giselle Dogan was second in scoring with 6-points, recovered three rebounds and two steals. Ella Baumgartner found the net for 5-points, four rebounds and an assist.
The team will now travel back home for a busy schedule next weekend as Jessup hosts the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic. Women's basketball will kick off the event with their meeting against Bushnell University on Thursday, November 20th. Tip-off will be at 5pm.
