Jessup Trades Wins at Hope

Warrior Pitchers Combine for 6 Strikeouts in Defensive Series

FULLERTON, Calif. -  Jessup's softball team has spent the last several days in limbo after having two doubleheaders cancelled from weather in the last two days. They finally got the opportunity to take the field on Saturday where they split with Hope International University

GAME 1

The first game of the day's doubleheader moved quickly as the defenses flexed their influence on the game. Hope opened up the action in the bottom of the 1st inning when Alejandra Guillen scored on a wild pitch.

Jessup would accumulate more hits than Hope International over the course of the game with eight compared to Hope's four, but couldn't manage to coax a base runner all the way around the diamond.

The Royals from Hope International managed to grab a safety run in the fifth and the Warriors left three stranded in the final two innings succumbing to the 2-0 defeat.

Shelbi Graifman (Ophir, CA) received the loss from the mound in game one, pitching seven innings allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four. Hope's Frances Campoy recorded the win also pitching seven innings allowing no runs on eight hits and striking out one.

GAME 2

Jessup took the reigns in game two starting in the fourth inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Clarissa Blaquera (Union City, CA) singled to right field with one out and advanced after a Riley Williams (Orangevale, CA) ground ball was mishandled by Hope's short-stop. A walk loaded the bases and a second free base on balls gave the Warriors the 1-0 lead. Before Hope could grab the inning's third out an error allowed Williams to reach home and score a second Jessup run.

Jessup made sure to grab a safety run in the top of the seventh inning off a Kyla Cisneros (Visalia, CA) two-out double deep into center field, driving home teammate Kaylee Surrell (Stockton, CA). The Warriors would hold strong defensively throughout the game holding Hope scoreless for a final score of 3-0 in favor of William Jessup.Jessica Myers (Modesto, CA) pitched a great game for the Warriors and was credited the win. Myers threw all seven innings allowing no runs on four hits while posting two strikeouts. Alyssa Felipe received the loss for the Royals pitching four innings allowing two runs on one hit and striking out one.

The Warriors will be playing a makeup game against Arizona Christian University on April 10 in La Mirada, California with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. Jessup softball returns home next weekend to take on Biola University on Friday, April 10 at 2 p.m. and Vanguard University on Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m.
