COSTA MESA, Calif. – Advancing to the first ever Golden State Athletic Conference championship game in program history, the Warriors squared off with top seeded Vanguard on Thursday. With the winner earning an automatic bid into the National Championships, it was Vanguard who took home the conference crown.
GAME ONE
Jessup took an early lead in the opening game Thursday thanks to a two-run single up the middle from Shelbi Graifman. The Lions would cut the lead in half with a run in the second, but a three run third placed Vanguard on top for good. Vanguard added two more in the fifth to go ahead by the eventual final of 4-2.
Graifman also did work on the mound for the Warriors, as she held Vanguard's seven through nine hitters to a hitless 0-for-10 tally. The top of the order would give Graifman fits however, as the Lions leadoff through five hitters went 9-for-15 in that portion of the lineup.
Courtney Thornhill would earn the win on the mound for the Lions, tossing 6.1 innings while allowing just the two first inning runs. Jessup's first five hitters in the lineup had a hard time against Thornhill, producing just a 3-for-5 combined day at the plate.
GAME TWO
Needing a win to keep their chances alive for a conference title, the Warriors sent Graifman back to the mound, and she would not allow a base hit until the fourth inning. In the fifth, after a base hit off a bunt followed with a sacrifice bunt, Vanguard drove in their lone run of the game off an RBI single from Emily Howard.
It took until the sixth inning before Jessup would get their first hit of the game off Lions' pitcher Vanessa Dwyer. The Warriors had a chance to take an early lead in the third when Ali Medina reached base via an error, but Medina would be stranded at third base.
Jessup got two runners on in the final inning, but the potential tying run would be left stranded at second base as the Warriors fell 1-0.
With the two victories, Vanguard has secured the 2017 GSAC Championship and an automatic bid to the 2017 NAIA Softball National Championship.
