WOODLAND, Calif. - The Lady Warriors softball team started the season off right with a series sweep against opening day opponent, the St. Katherine Firestorm with a 16-3 finish in game one, and a 10-1 finish in game two at the Woodland Sports Complex on Friday.
The bats were on fire for the Warriors as they opened up the bottom of the first with a 6-run inning seeing the line-up through a whole at-bat, plus one. Starting pitcher for the Warriors
Shelbi Graifman got some insurance runs of her own at the plate with a 2RBI triple to bring in
Corina Salinas who reached on an error and
Abbie Lewis who got on with a bunt single.
Natalie Basaldua would clear the bases with a single to score Graifman, finished off with a double by
Stephanie Scott who cleared the runners on first and third with her double up the middle.
The Warriors picked things back up where they started adding another four runs in the bottom of the next frame with the Firestorm walking the first run in, followed by a double to center field by
Lauren Garoutte to bring in three runs.
In the top of the third St. Katherine would get on the board and add another two runs in the top of the fourth off relief pitcher
Brooke Sarro.
Basaldua would go 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI's follows by Lewis (2-3) with two stolen bases, Graifman 1-3 with 2 RBI's, Garoutte with 5 RBI's,
Raechel Hooper with 3 RBI's and Scott with two. Graifman, 2017 GSAC pitcher of the year, collected her first win in her 3 inning outing with three strikeouts.
The same line-up would start the second game and Graifman would once again dominate the circle pitching the complete 5 innings for a 2-0 start, adding four more strikeouts to her three in game 1. She would also be one of three going 2-for-3 with an RBI from the box.
Going up 5-0 in the bottom of the first frame in game two, the Warriors opened up the inning with a pair of hits by Salinas and Lewis, followed by Graifman.
Jenna Patterson would open things up with a 2RBI double to right as Jessup took a 4-0 lead, capped by Garoutte collecting her sixth RBI on the day with a single to shortstop.
The Warriors would another run in the bottom of the second, unearned, while St. Katherine scored their only run of the game in the next inning with a pair of singles.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Warriors would get the final insurance runs with a single by Lewis and Graifman, followed by a double by Basaldua bringing in two. Hooper would bring in the final run with a sac fly to the fence as the Warriors closed out the top of the fifth for the 10-1 victory in game two.
