Clouds Clear as Warriors Split on Day One of Simpson Classic

Jessup takes down EOU (8-7), while dropping to Simpson (8-5)

REDDING, Calif.  - After a storm of rain and snow hit Shasta County and schedules were adjusted, the Warriors went up to the Simpson Classic in Redding splitting on day one of the two-day matchups against nationally recognized Eastern Oregon University and Simpson University.

GAME 1
The Warriors started things off strong with a three-run opening frame against the Mountaineers. Returning sophomore and All-GSAC award winner, Abbie Lewis started the game off with a single to center field and would come in to score as Chelsie Kam-Aweau laid down the sacrifice bunt. Mehana John continued the offensive surge with a triple to score Natalie Basaldua, while Jena Ovens would be the last run to cross capitalizing on EOU's wild throw.

Eastern Oregon would answer back in the bottom of the second adding a pair of runs and another 3 runs for the lead 5-3 after the fifth inning.

But the Warriors weren't done yet as the sixth inning would see five runs of their own for the 8-3 advantage. Jenna Patterson would start the rally with a home run in the first pitch delivered in the inning. Lauren Garoutte would fall one bag short of Patterson with an RBI-triple, while patience at the plate would be key with a pair of walks and Kaylee Surrell and Ovens both brought in the final runs of the inning.

The Mountaineers would add another pair in the bottom of the frame, but a scoreless seventh inning would end in the Warriors advantage 8-7 to open the Simpson Classic. Brooke Sarro would collect her second win of the season in a five-inning outing with two strikeouts.

GAME 2
Facing their second ranked opponent of the day, Jessup took on local rival the Simpson Redhawks where a high scoring game would top the other way as the Warriors were not able to catch up with the Red Hawks lead.

Jessup would get on the board first as Lewis made her way around the bases on the Red Hawks errors, but the home team would answer right back in the bottom of the first with a trio of runs to take the lead. Simpson would add another two runs in the following frame for the 5-1 advantage where the score would stay till the fourth inning.

In the fourth, the Warriors would attempt a comeback as Lauren Garoutte would hit a two-run homer to bridge the gap, 5-3 Simpson lead. But another three runs would be added to the Red Hawks column. The final runs for Jessup would be led by Lewis reaching on an error and making her way around and Basaldua singling, scoring on a Johns single to cap the Warriors runs at 5, just short of the Red Hawks lead, dropping their first contest of the year.

Jessup will return to the diamond tomorrow to take on familiar opponents in Eastern Oregon (10 am) and Simpson (2 pm) before heading back home.
