Warriors Split with St. Katherine

CARDIFF, Calif. - After two dominant offensive performances against St. Katherine on Saturday, the women's softball team (16-16 overall, 8-10 GSAC) split their double header with USK Monday losing the opening game 4-2 before bouncing back to win 5-3.

In game one, the Warriors took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a triple by Jena Ovens as she later scored from third on a Chelsie Kam-Aweau single to right field. WJU's Lauren Garoutte later scored in the third inning after a wild pitch giving Jessup a 2-0 lead.

However, that would be the last lead they held as St. Katherine went on to score the games final four runs including two in the third inning and two more in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach.

Six different Warriors registered hits including Ovens' hit, scored run and RBI to lead the attack. Ovens and Garoutte also each registered a stolen base. Taylor Garcia was on the mound for five and a third innings allowing 12 hits, and two earned runs. Garcia also had one strikeout while facing 26 batters.

In game two,  it was strong fourth and fifth innings that proved to be enough.

In contrast to game one, St. Katherine got hot early scoring the games opening two runs as Jessup fell behind after just two innings of play.

However, the comeback effort began in the fourth inning when Ovens homered to left center field. Later in the inning Taya Ruiz singled to right helping Jenna Patterson score. To tie things up at two all.

In the fifth inning Jessup poured it on scoring another two runs from Kam-Aweau on a sacrifice fly out and Garoutte scored the final insurance run on a homer of her own.

With the win, the Warriors are now 7-3 in their last 10 games as they'll look to continue their winning ways Friday when the host Hope International, first pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Foskett Park. The team will then conclude their regular season home games Saturday when they face Vanguard.
