Game Recap: Softball |

Early Lead Gives Mariners Advantage Over Warriors

LINCOLN, Calif. - The Jessup softball team returned home for a doubleheader against Marymount on Friday afternoon as an early lead by the Mariners in each contest would decide the final fate to take game one, 6-0 and game two 12-3 as the Warriors dropped to 5-11 overall.

The Warriors watched game one slip away early and couldn't recover in a 6-0 loss to Marymount California University as a second-inning home run would spark the Mariners scoring frenzy to follow in the third and fourth inning.

One bright spot for the Jessup Warriors was a single by Natalie Basaldua in the first inning, as she extended it to land on second base, but she would be left. The only other hit recorded for the Warriors was by junior Hailey Hiett who singled down the right-field line in the third inning.

Katie Blankenheim led things off in the circle for the Warriors, as the complete game outing recorded seven hits and six runs, with a season-high six strikeouts.

Marymount took the lead on a home run in the first inning and would continue from there to take the 12-0 advantage in game two before the Warriors had a last-chance inning the bottom of the fifth.

A lead-off double would get the inning started as Maddy Melo sent one down the leftfield line and Kaela Hangebrauck would follow suit with a 2-RBI triple do that same line to score the Warriors' first runs on the day. Hangebrauck would come in to score on a fielder's choice as the rally continued with Hiett singling up the middle, but the Warriors would come up short in the 12-3 loss.

Taylor Swift was on the rubber for William Jessup Warriors to start as she allowed five hits and five runs over two innings, striking out two.  Freshman Terra Goetz threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen to close out the contest.

The Warriors will continue to play tomorrow as they pick back up with conference play at Menlo College, the first game of the doubleheader slated for 12 pm.
