Trent’s Walk-Off Powers Jessup Over No. 17 Yotes In Day-Two Split

Big hitting propels Jessup in game one; Warriors earn their fifth win of the season against nationally-ranked opponents

LINCOLN, Calif. – Jessup Softball retook the field for a double-dose of games as they completed their second day of action against (17) The College of Idaho and (RV) Oregon Tech, ending day two in a split putting their record at 5-8. The Warriors escaped game one with a 6-5 win over the Yotes in walk-off fashion, and a late push in game two came up short as they dropped a 5-4 battle to the Owls.

It was a rocky start for the Warriors in game one as Jessup gave up four runs in the opening inning. However, at the beginning of the second inning, the Warriors showed their power at the plate. Shay Trent got things going with a solo homer which was followed by Kayla Altheide doubling to left-center. Moments later, the Warriors capitalized on errors from the Yotes, which allowed two more runs to come in.

Sam Lorge got the third inning going with a base hit, then later advanced to third on a fielding error by the Yotes. Trent brought in another run in her next at-bat as she had an RBI-single putting the score at 4-4 after three innings.

Katie Blankenheim was a huge part of the Warriors making a run to tie things up as she pitched four consecutive scoreless innings. The Yotes wouldn't go quietly, and despite having the bases loaded with no outs in the sixth inning, Blankenheim kept them to only one run in the frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors tied the game as Aholelei scored after opening the inning with a base hit. Trent, who had a phenomenal game, stepped to the plate with Maddy Melo on third and landed the game-winning base hit in left-center, bringing Melo home for the winning run.

The game one victory gives the Warriors a two-game sweep over the Yotes and secures Jessup's third win over a nationally-ranked team in the last six days.

After the game, Head Coach Brie Campbell explained that she happy with the trajectory her team is on, stating, "We competed very hard this weekend, our team is headed in the right direction."

Game two started with a bang as the Owls quickly posted two runs, but the Warriors promptly countered as they ended the first inning by scoring three of their own. Lorge's two-run-double was quickly followed by an RBI single down the right-field line from Natalie Basaldua.

After the prolific first inning, runs were then hard to come by for the Warriors as they only scored one more, coming in the fifth inning. Aholelei reached on a single to start the seventh and was able to advance to second but was unable to be brought home, with the Warriors losing 4-5 to the Owls.

"Very soon we will find a way to win all these close games," added Campbell. "Tonight, we were in a close battle in which could of gone either way. We are prepared and getting better day in and day out."

On the season, Jessup move to 5-8 overall, with all 13 games played coming against teams receiving national votes.

The Warriors will be back on their home field next Saturday for a double-header as they will be hosting another team receiving votes, the Simpson Red Hawks. The games can be streamed HERE.
