Aholelei’s Big Bat Leads (RV) Jessup to a Three-Game Sweep in San Diego

Jessup’s shortstop clubs three home runs in the doubleheader; Warriors end game one early via the run-rule

SANTEE, Calif. – The Warriors (12-14; 6-5 GSAC) continued their winning ways Saturday as they wrapped up the three-game series in San Diego with a sweep of the Hawks (7-16, 0-11 GSAC). Backed by a three home run day from Seli Aholelei, (RV) Jessup got the job done in dominating fashion.

Head Coach Brie Campbell credited the fight in her team to earn the sweep, stating, "It's always difficult to get a sweep in a such a strong conference but the girls did a great job continuing to compete at their level. "

Jessup wasted no time getting on the board in game one, as Aholelei launched her first home run of the day to put the Warriors ahead 2-0. After a scoreless second inning from both teams, Ahoelelei went yard again, this time a solo shot.

Katie Blankenheim was superb in the circle during game one, holding the Hawks scoreless through three innings.

In the top of fourth, the Warriors began to open things up. A bases-loaded walk for Shay Trent drove in the first run. Aholelei then tripled, scoring three additional runs but was subsequently called out at home. Moments later, the Warriors were again able to get the bases-loaded for Liana Castro, and she delivered with a grand slam.

The Hawks were able to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, but a fielding error by SDCC allowed Jessup to score two more in the fifth. The game reached its conclusion as the Jessup defense got a 1-6-3 double play, invoking the run-rule as the Warriors earned a 13-2 win after just five innings.

Getting things going in game two, Hailey Hiett took advantage of getting hit by a pitch by then stealing second. Upon reaching second, Hiett was able to capitalize off a throwing error, allowing her to score and put WJU ahead 1-0. However, the Hawks did respond as they got their first run in the third inning to tie the game.

Aholelei got on with a base hit to start the fourth, and after stealing second base, a throwing error advanced her to third. From there, Aholelei was able to steal home, getting another run across the plate for Jessup. Shortly after, Mehana Johns hit a sac fly which allowed Kaela Hangebrauck to score. Four innings in, and the Warriors led the Hawks 3-1.

As the game continued, Jessup added more insurance runs, and in the sixth inning when Aholelei hit another home run, her third of the day. Terra Goetz tripled down the left-field line, scoring Hannah Aguilar. Goetz then scored the final run of the game off a Hiett sac-fly.

Blankenheim and Goetz were terrific for the Warriors in the circle as they combined for ten scoreless innings. Blankenheim, in game one, finished with no earned runs, and in the second game, Goetz only allowed one run as this duo was superb in helping the Warriors complete the sweep.

The three-game sweep was a perfect team win for the Warriors, as every player on the active roster contributed and received playing time. Campbell spoke on the complementary softball played by her team this weekend, stating, "The bats were strong today and our defense continues to grow behind a strong showing in the circle by Katie and Terra."

The (RV) Warriors will be back on the road Wednesday for a doubleheader in Redding as they will face off with (RV) Simpson University at 1 p.m. The game can be live-streamed HERE.
