LINCOLN, Calif. – The Warrior softball team was back in action Saturday as Jessup hosted Corban University. It was unchartered territory for the Warriors, who were taking the field following a loss for the first time all season. Jessup split the day with Corban, dropping game one 8-6 before winning game two 9-1 in five innings.
The first game of the day was a back-and-forth affair. Corban struck first in the first inning thanks to a throwing error, but Jessup evened things up in the bottom frame thanks to an RBI single by
Sam Lorge.
The Warriors led by as many as three, but Corban battled back with a five-run fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Jessup got one back with the help of a throwing error in the bottom half of the inning, but Corban added one more and held on to win the game 8-6.
Maddy Ybarra and
Natalie Nash each had two hits in the contest, with Ybarra adding an RBI as well.
Jessup started the second game with a bang, as
Shay Trent launched a two-run homer just two batters into the game.
Kaylee Winn batted home the first of her three RBI in the first as well with a sacrifice fly that scored
Kaela Hangebrauck.
The Warriors added two more in the second thanks to a pair of runs batted in by
Maddy Ybarra and
Natalie Nash to make the score 5-0 Jessup.
Corban got one back in the fourth, but Jessup's offense helped the team roll to a 9-1 victory in five innings.
Hangebrauck made two acrobatic catches in left field on the defensive side that helped keep Corban off the board.
Maikyla Nelson earned her fourth win of the season with a dominant performance in the circle. Nelson pitched a complete game, allowing just one run, unearned, on three hits while retiring three batters on strikes.
"I was proud of the team for bouncing back and bringing the energy in game two for the win," said head coach
Brie Campbell. "If we can piece together seven solid innings, I have all the confidence in the world that this team will continue to compete at the highest level."
Jessup has earned a well-deserved period of rest, as the Warriors won't take the field for another six days. They will be back in action on February 18 when Jessup hosts the top two teams in the country in No. 1 Oregon Tech and No. 2 College of Idaho.
"We will continue to work this next week with another two solid opponents, and we look forward to bringing our best softball to the field Friday and Saturday," said Campbell.
First pitch against No. 1 Oregon Tech will be at noon, while No. 2 College of Idaho is scheduled for 6 pm.
