One Hitter Highlights Jessup’s Sweep of Hope International

Goetz steals the show with a one hitter in game two; Warriors pick up two wins over a team receiving national votes

LINCOLN, Calif. – Jessup softball's hot start to GSAC play continued on Saturday, as the (RV) Warriors swept the (RV) Hope International Royals to improve to 3-1 in conference play. With the wins, Jessup is now tied for first in the conference with Arizona Christian through one weekend of play.

"Today was a good day, we came out motivated to win some games and from the first hit to the last, they stayed true to the course," said head coach Brie Campbell. "Two great wins and a positive weekend starting conference play is great momentum moving forward."

The Warrior bats were the story of game number one, as Jessup's offense shined against one of the nation's best pitchers in Allie Puente of HIU.

Maddy Ybarra started things off for Jessup, hitting a leadoff triple to start the game and scored thanks to a sacrifice fly from Sam Lorge. Lorge later hit a towering two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning for her second of the weekend to put the Warriors up 3-1. Hope tied things up with two runs in the fourth, but Jessup took the lead once again, this time thanks to some smart baserunning from Ybarra.

In the circle, Katie Blankenheim earned her sixth win of the season, keeping the Royals off the board in the final inning with the bases loaded to preserve the 4-3 victory. Blankenheim had the strikeout pitch working all day, retiring eight betters on strikes.

Terra Goetz was the story of game two, pitching a one-hitter for the Warriors in an 8-0 winning effort in six innings. Goetz's one-hitter was helped by the Jessup defense, who had a hand in recording all 18 outs in the game.

"Katie and Terra were lights out in the circle," said Campbell. "I can't say enough about them and the defense behind them."

Jessup will have a few days to rest before taking on Menlo College on Tuesday afternoon. Following the series against Menlo, Jessup will hit the road for the weekend in the first road trip of the season where it will face San Diego Christian and Marymount California.
