Warriors Split to End Six-Game Week

Ybarra led the Warriors going 4-for-5 with 5 stolen bases over the two games

COMPTON, Calif. - After securing the sweep of San Diego Christian, the Warriors ended the six-game week with a split at Marymount, now 18-10 overall, 7-1 in GSAC play.

"We had a long week and walking away with a 5-1 finish, 4-0 in conference play is something to be proud of," said head coach Brie Campbell. "Today we executed late in game one for the win, and in game two some innings got away from us, but we will learn and bounce back."

The Jessup Warriors nabbed the lead late in the game in a 7-2 victory over Marymount University in game one on Sunday. With a tie ballgame of two in the top of the fifth, Sam Lorge singled on a 2-0 count, scoring two runs after Kayla Altheide singled and Maddy Ybarra drew the walk.

Before that, Ybarra was the first to hit the scoreboard for the day in the first with a single, coming around to score on an error by the Mariners behind Lorge. In the third Ybarra singled again, Lorge following suit and Kaela Hangebrauck scoring Hailey Hiett for the second run of the day.

Katie Blankenheim led things off in the circle for the Jessup Warriors going two innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out two and walking one. Terra Goetz came in relief for the remainder collecting her 8th win on the season allowing just three hits.

In game two Marymount bested William Jessup in a high-scoring affair, 9-6.

It wasn't until the second inning the Warriors got their offense started. Maikyla Nelson doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring the first run of the game as Natalie Nash reached after a double of her own to start things off.

Top of the lineup, Ybarra would take a 0-2 count deep center for a two-run bomb as the Warriors held the 4-2 advantage headed into the third inning behind starter Maikyla Nelson.

Marymount pulled away for good with three runs in the third inning.  Nelson threw a wild pitch allowing two runs across the plate for the Mariners and another single would push the score 5-4 after three full innings.

Marymount would add one more in the fourth and three runs in the sixth inning to secure the lead.

Down four runs in the last-chance inning, Ybarra reached on a walk advancing to scoring position as Lorge hit a single through the left side. An error by the Mariners would allow another run for the Warriors to score, but it wouldn't be enough.

Nelson started the game for the Jessup Warriors, surrendering five runs on seven hits over three innings. Katie Blankenheim threw three innings out of the bullpen.

Ybarra led the Warriors going 4-for-5 on the day with 5 stolen bases, drawing three walks and collecting three RBI's with a homerun.

The Warriors will remain on the road for another week as they head to Arizona, returning to GSAC play with Arizona Chrsitian on Friday and OUAZ on Saturday.
