ROCKLIN, Calif. – (RV) Jessup softball had its final non-conference bout of the regular season as the Warriors welcomed Westcliff University to town for a doubleheader. The opponent wasn't the only thing the Warriors had to battle, as stormy skies plagued the players all afternoon. Due to the weather, the games were played at Sierra College.
Jessup's bats were working all day, as four triples in the afternoon helped elevate Jessup to a sweep of the day.
Maddy Ybarra led the way with two, while
Kaela Hangebrauck and
Shay Trent each added one.
Sam Lorge had an extra-base hit as well with a double.
The Warriors rewrote the record books as well, as Ybarra broke the school record for triples in a season with nine.
"The ladies did a great job today overcoming a mindset of the weather being an issue and powering through to get back into the competitive nature to play hard," said head coach
Brie Campbell.
The Warriors were aggressive on the basepaths as well, with ten stolen bases in the day, including eight in game one, tying the third-most in program history. Jessup's aggression on the basepath also set a new school record for stolen bases in a season with 107, shattering the previous record of 101.
Game one started slow, as both teams were scoreless through the first two innings. Jessup delivered the first blow in the third inning with an RBI triple from
Maddy Ybarra. The Warriors added three more in the fourth thanks to a pair of RBI knocks by
Natalie Nash and
Aaliyah Pineda. Nash came around to score thanks to a double steal. Hangebrauck and Trent each brought a run home in game one as well.
Katie Blankenheim earned her thirteenth win of the season, pitching her third shutout in her last four starts. Blankenheim surrendered seven hits in the outing but came up clutch when it mattered most to keep a zero on the scoreboard.
The Warriors kept the offense going in game two, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three innings. Westcliff scored one in the fourth, but Jessup kept rolling on its way to a 6-1 victory.
Auzzie Najar-Meza led the Warriors with three runs batted in, while Nash and Ybarra each batted one home as well.
"It was a great offensive attack for us today, and being able to adjust at the plate and keep the ball out of the air with the wind was a good factor," said Campbell. "We also got hits where we needed to in certain situations to push runners where we needed to to get in scoring position."
Maikyla Nelson earned the win in five innings of work, allowing one run on four hits for the Warriors. Despite the wet conditions, Nelson's command was strong all game, as she only gave up one base on balls.
Terra Goetz earned the save, pitching the final two innings and keeping Westcliff off the board to preserve the win.
Jessup will be back in action on Friday as the Warriors host OUAZ at Foskett Regional Park in hopes of clinching the GSAC. The Warriors currently have a three-game lead with six conference games remaining.
