Record-Breaking Day for Jessup Softball

Warriors set a new program record for 33 wins in a single season; Jessup finishes the regular season 20-4 in the GSAC

ATHERTON, Calif.-- (RV) Jessup Softball put the cherry on top of the most storied regular season in school history. After clinching the GSAC regular-season title over the weekend, the Warriors took to Atherton to face the Oaks of Menlo College. It went about as well as it could have gone, as Jessup swept the day to earn a program-record 32nd and 33rd wins on the season.

"This team is special. I'll say it again and again, they don't go out playing for records, wins, or titles, but for each other, and in the process, they have achieved so much," said head coach Brie Campbell. "I can't tell you how proud of them I am thus far and their continued hard work to get better every day as we are not nearly done yet."

Jessup needed some late-game heroics in game one, as the Warriors found themselves down 1-0 in the sixth inning. The Warriors entered the sixth with just three hits but proved that their bats could get hot when it mattered most.

Maddy Ybarra led things off with a single before Sam Lorge sent a towering two-run blast over the left-field fence to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. Katie Blankenheim took the circle for the final inning and shut the door for her 16th win of the season, tying her for second all-time in program history.

"It was a gritty game one win, but most importantly, it was good to see the team make the adjustments in game two to get ahead early," said Campbell. "Again, our pitchers held down the circle well, allowing just one run across in the two games, and the defensive contributions proved well."

Jessup wasn't done for the day, as the Warriors took the field for game two and tossed their ninth shutout of the season in a 5-0 winning effort.

Terra Goetz started the game and pitched five strong innings, allowing just three hits and earning her fourth win of the season. Maikyla Nelson entered in relief in the sixth inning, allowing just one hit in two innings of work.

On the offensive side, nearly all of Jessup's runs came in the fourth inning. Shay Trent opened up the scoring with an RBI bunt single with the bases loaded to score the first run of the game.

Ybarra walked after to bring one more home before Lorge earned her third and fourth RBIs of the day with a single. Hannah Aguilar added an insurance run in the seventh with a sac fly.

Jessup will have some time off before hitting the road for the GSAC tournament in Irvine starting Tuesday. The Warriors will have the top seed in the conference tournament.
