ROCKLIN, Calif. – After picking up their first conference victory of the season Thursday, the Warriors got back to action Saturday as they played host to a talented (21) The Master's College Mustangs. Jessup held their own for the majority of the match, but after fatigue began to set in during overtime; the Warriors couldn't sustain their attack as they narrowly fell 1-0.
The Warriors had a few chances early on to try and give themselves an early lead. Just inside ten minutes into the match, sophomore Marrissa Sanders (Sacramento, CA) took a rip at the net from about 25 yards out, but missed wide right. Ten minutes later the Warriors went on a fast-paced counter attack, but a through ball to freshman Michelle Kimball (Cameron Park, CA) came too late as she was offside.
Jessup's closest first-half opportunity came in the 39th minute when after a steal, the Warriors found freshman Yvette Perez (Santa Rosa, CA) one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but her shot narrowly went wide right. The Warriors outshot the Mustangs 5-4 in the first half, but at the break neither team had found the back of the net.
The second-half saw a different side of the Warriors, as they played more physical to produce some chances. The physical play almost backfired in the 54th minute when a hard foul outside the box gave the Mustangs a free kick within scoring distance, but the shot soared over the crossbar. Late in the half, Jessup almost got lucky as junior Michelle Sandage (Carson City, NV) was pulled down to the ground in the box, but the referee did not issue a penalty.
After 90-minutes of soccer, the game was still scoreless and required overtime. After playing their hearts out for the whole regulation, fatigue finally set in for Jessup in overtime as Master's took over all the momentum. In the 97th minute of play, Taylor Rowden of the Mustangs curled a shot into the upper right corner to win the game.
In goal for Jessup Saturday was freshman Allison Marlow (Huntington Beach, CA). Marlow played a great gave, recording a number of diving stops to keep the game even. She would finish the match with a total of 4 saves.
With the loss, Jessup falls down to 8-6 overall, and 1-5 in conference play. The Warriors currently sit in eighth place in the GSAC standings, 11 points behind first place Biola University.
Jessup will get back to action on Tuesday when they play host to the Menlo College Oaks. This will be the first soccer contest between Jessup and Menlo since the Oaks joined the GSAC. Tuesday's game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
