ROCKLIN, Calif. – After starting their season off with a narrow overtime victory last night, the Lady Warriors closed out the 2015 Bill Holtz Warrior Classic with a matchup against old Cal Pac foes, the Pacific Union College Pioneers. From start to finish it was all Jessup Saturday as they improved to 2-0 behind a 63-37 victory.
The Warriors came out hitting on all cylinders Saturday, starting the night on a huge 17-2 run. The Warriors defense looked the best they have in years as they allowed the Pioneers to score only four points in the opening quarter.
Quarter two was a lot like that of the first quarter, as the Warriors placed a lead foot on the gas pedal and refused to let up. Jessup went on a 12-1 run in the middle of the quarter to increase their lead to 23 points. The Warriors allowed Pacific Union to total just 13 first half points, as Jessup entered the break leading 34-13.
It was the third quarter where the Pioneers finally began to show some life and battle into the ballgame. Both sides traded basket-for-basket, but still the Warriors held the upper edge as they outscored their opponents 16-14 to enter the final quarter leading by 23.
Jessup played the fourth quarter conservative, consistently subbing multiple players in-and-out at each stoppage to keep fresh legs on the court. Pacific Union again played the quarter fairly even with the Warriors, but it was again obvious that the Warriors were in total control. The strong night on both ends of the floor came to an end with Jessup on top by 26 points.
The Warriors capped off the night shooting just 30-percent (24-for-80) from the field, but they lit up the stat sheet staking 25 more shots than that of their opponents. The Pioneers were held to just a 29.1-percent (16-for-55) from the field in the loss.
Sophomore Ashlyn Jones (Stockton, CA) led all players Saturday night with 15 points, going 6-for-11 from the field in just 16-minutes of play. Jones also finished the night recording 5 rebounds. Freshman Olivia Luu (Riverbank, CA) had a strong game for the second night in a row, connecting three times from three-point-range for a total of 11 points. Senior Alexandra Rodriguez (Rocklin, CA) had 9 points in the victory.
With the win, the Warriors improve to a perfect 2-0 on the young season. The 2015 campaign continues on Friday when the Warriors travel to Redding to take part in a two-game tournament held at Simpson University. Jessup will square off against Northwest Christian on Friday, and then take on host Simpson University Saturday night.
