Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jessup Women Cruise to Victory at Merced

Warriors Improve to 7-2 After Solid Performance on the Road

Merced, Calif. – The Warrior's women's basketball team (7-2) were in control all of Saturday night as they traveled to take on University of California Merced (1-8)  for the teams' second and final meeting of the season, ending with an 85-62 Warrior win.

The Warriors of William Jessup and the Bobcats of UC Merced played a heated battle earlier this season with Jessup using an overtime before besting Merced 79-73. This time, the Warriors took control of the game early, jumping to a 15-8 led in the game's opening five minutes and never looking back.

The Warriors didn't live off of huge streaks in the game; theirs was a steady, unrelenting attack that continuously gained ground through-out the game. Jessup closed the first quarter up seven while the half ended with Jessup up by ten. The Warriors then secured  an 18 point lead after quarter number three. Whenever Merced made a move it appeared Jessup had the answer and then some, letting go of no ground.

Part of the great success came as Jessup overcame a recent shooting slump which had plagued the Warriors in several early season games. The Warriors shot just under 50% from the field against Merced and an impressive 40% from 3-point range. Crystal Sewell (Ophir, CA) once again led the offensive charge shooting perfectly from the field making five of five and sinking six out of seven free throws.

Fellow senior Alexandra Rodriguez (Rocklin, CA) played a big game for Jessup just missing a double-double after posting 10 points and nine rebounds. The younger class got involved as well with freshman Olivia Luu (Riverbank, CA) grabbing 12 points to go along with five assists and five rebounds.

The Warriors will start conference play next Saturday, December 12, with their Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) opener at home against 14th ranked The Master's College. The game will tip off at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at 3 p.m.
