ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Warrior volleyball team played a grueling four-game tournament at UC Santa Cruz this weekend gaining its first wins of the season and the first wins for new head coach Shasta Millhollin-Bossom. Jessup defeated University of the Redlands and Mills College while falling to Lewis & Clark College and host UCSC.
Friday vs. University of the Redlands
Jessup started the tournament taking on the University of the Redlands, simultaneously finding their first victory of the season 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-20). Freshman Carlie Mills (Scottsdale, AZ) led the Warrior's offensive charge with 14 kills.
We have been working incredibly hard in pursuit of our first victory," said Millhollin-Bossom. "We have been focusing on smart and aggressive volleyball which is a very tough combination. In our first match against Redlands, we struggled to hold on to a lead, but found our stride and closed out. The team felt great, and I was so thankful to see them finish strong!"
Friday vs Lewis & Clark College
Jessup, fueled by their earlier victory, fought tooth and nail through the match which ended in a 3-2 loss (26-24, 25-17, 25-27, 10-25, 9-15). Juniors Ellie Selleck (Grass Valley, CA) and Jennah Richmond (Napa, CA) took on attacking duties in the game, each with 11, while Kylie Thompson (Gilbert, AZ) recorded her season-high 34 assists.
Saturday vs The Mills College
A night of rest did the Warriors well and they came out with a vengeance early Saturday afternoon to post their first 3-0 sweep of the season (25-8, 25-5, 25-9). Jessup had yet another player step up offensively in the form of senior Betsy Guerrero with 10 kills while Thompson put up a reliable 32 assists.
Saturday vs University of California Santa Cruz
Jessup finished the tournament playing host team UC Santa Cruz, but after an epic fight, couldn't find the ground to close a win and the match ended 0-3 (27-29, 22-25, 19-25). Huevelhosrt and Selleck both recorded 8 kills and Thompson had 26 assists in the match.
"We continued to play solid volleyball the entire the tournament, falling just shy of two more wins," concluded Millhollin-Bossom. "The win against Mills was amazing because it took so much focus for us to stay on task the entire match, and we did. We are on our way to a successful season!"
William Jessup University has been thrilled with the moves that coach MIllhollin-Bossom is making during her opening year at the helm of the Warrior volleyball program.
"Shasta's vision and enthusiasm for volleyball and the well-being of our ladies in the volleyball program has transformed this group of student-athletes," commented Jessup's associate athletic director Lance Von Vogt. "Her practices have energy and pop. You can see the girls thriving in the environment and that they are hungry for more. These are just the first wins of many for Shasta and our volleyball program."
Warrior volleyball will be playing their first regular season game at home on Tuesday evening, 8 September, at 5:00 PM as they play host to Pacific Union College.
