Warriors Narrowly Drop Road Match to Holy Names 2-1

Rodriguez Nets First Goal of the Season, Hawks Score Late Goal to Win

ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Warriors hit the road Tuesday to take on NCAA division II squad, the Holy Names University Hawks, in Oakland. The Warriors got things rolling early, taking an early first-half lead, but a couple misfortunes allowed Holy Names to send Jessup home empty-handed with a 2-1 loss.

Jessup got the scoring going in the 15th minute when junior Jacob Rodriguez (Pacifica, CA) found the back of the net for his first goal of the year. The goal was set up by a beautiful cross from junior Alexander Thompson (Sacramento, CA) to junior Justin Soria (Rocklin, CA). Soria then laid off the ball to Rodriguez at the edge of the 18-yard box, who fired a low shot to the lower corner.

Two minutes later, Holy Names evened up the game. Tomas Horak took a free kick from the edge of the box and drove the ball to the far post to level the game. The goal would be the last of the half, as both sides entered the locker room square at one.

In the second half, Holy Names took the lead in the 55th minute after an unfortunate bounce. The Hawks went on a breakaway attack and fired a shot on net, but a tremendous save from junior Zachary Kammerer (Rocklin, CA) kept the ball out. Unfortunately, the ball bounced right to Toby Tomassi inside the six-yard box who placed it in the net to take the lead.

Jessup came out attacking after the go-ahead goal, firing a number of chances on net. Rodriguez was denied his second goal of the day in the 67th minute, and two minutes later junior Joseph Tappero's (Rocklin, CA) shot on goal was denied by the keeper. With just over five minutes remaining, Soria came close to tying the game with a header on goal, but the shot was deflected and the Hawks held on to their lead.

The Warriors put up 6 shots on goal in the match but finished the day with just the single goal. Holy Names placed 8 shots on goal, with Kammerer finishing the day with 6 saves.

With the loss, the Warriors fall to 1-2 on the season. The year continues on Monday when they return home to play host to UC Merced at Jessup Field. Jessup and UC Merced squared off last season, with the Warriors falling 2-0. Game time Monday is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
