Santa Clarita, Calif. – The Warrior's men's basketball team (13-5, 5-2) have won four conference games in a row including two wins against ranked teams. Their latest win came on Thursday when Jessup defeated The Master's (4-11, 1-6) on their home court 94-63.
Coach Von Vogt didn't want to give The Mustangs the luxury of keeping the game close in front of a friendly crowd and the Warriors echoed that sentiment as they took the court. Jessup jumped to a 19-3 lead at the outset of the game getting the entire team involved as five Warriors scored in the opening run.
After the opening round The Master's was able to catch their fall. At the eight minute mark down 19 The Master's mounted a 9-4 run. Eventually, the Mustangs whittled their deficit down to nine before the halftime horn sounded with the scoreboard showing a Warrior lead at 43-34.
The Warriors tweaked their strategy during the break and came out of halftime seemingly on a mission. The second half opened with a Corey Clement (Las Vegas, NV) corner three pointer after Andre Smith (San Diego, CA) drew the double team in the post. The next two trips down the court treated Jessup fans watching online to back-to-back threes from Guillermo Nunez (Manteca, CA) and once again the Warriors were in complete command of the game.
The difference this half was the Warriors would not cede any advantages to the Mustangs. Jessup ensured that their lead never again fell below the double digit mark and made a 10-1 run with six minutes remaining to put the game out of reach from their opponents at 83-54.
"I believe our guys are beginning to understand the necessary effort, toughness, and teamwork to become the best versions of our-self," commented head coach Lance Von Vogt. "We have a long ways to go, but if we continue to trust the process I believe we have a chance to compete deep into March."
Jessup had great success moving the ball around which resulted in five Warriors scoring in the double-digits. Nunez lead the Warriors with 18 points and 4 assists followed by Senior Desmond Floyd (Gilbert, AZ) who shot 8-9 from the field and finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Smith was also one rebound shy of a double-double as he finished the game with 11 points and 9 rebounds while Clement posted 11 points, 6 rebound, and 3 assists.
The Masters College was led by junior Harrison White who was one free-throw shy of a perfect shooting day after going 9-9 from the field and 4-4 from behind the three-point arc to finish the game with 23, while teammate Reid Shackelford posted his own 20 points.
For the Warriors, this was likely the easier contest of the two game road-trip. Jessup will have the day off tomorrow before taking on last year's National Championship runner up, #15 Westmont College in Santa Barbara on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Warriors return home next Thursday to host #10 Arizona Christian before turning around to host #7 Hope International for homecoming weekend on Saturday, January 30.
