Warriors Pick Up First GSAC Victory with Second-Straight 3-0 Win

Jessup Picks up Sixth Win in Last Seven Games, Improve Goal Differential to +15 on the Year

PHOENIX, Ariz. – After starting the season with back-to-back shutout loses, the Warriors have been on a tear as of late as they picked up their sixth win of the season Friday, securing a clean sheet 3-0 win over Arizona Christian.

Jessup's defense put forth a great showing in the win Saturday. Arizona Christian nearly scored in the 38th minute, as the Warriors conceded a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box. The shot was driven under the leaping wall, but was denied by a strong save from senior Nicholas Schnable (Rocklin, CA).

Another close chance for the Firestorm came late in the 80th minute on a counterattack. An Arizona Christian attacker had a 1-on-1 chance with junior Robert Harmelink (Modesto, CA) in the box, but senior defender Brennan Entz (Auburn, CA) raced in from behind to make a great sliding challenge to knock the ball away for a corner kick and avoid a potential scoring opportunity.

Offensively, Jessup wasted as little time as possible to score, getting on the board in just the fourth minute off a counterattack goal from sophomore Omar Magana (Sacramento, CA). The goal was Magana's second of the year and was unassisted.

In the 49th minute, Jessup added to their lead as senior Michael Mazzoni (Rocklin, CA) drove in a rebound attempt to make it 2-0. Junior Christian Filbrun (Lincoln, CA) whipped in a nice cross to senior Justin Soria (Rocklin, CA) in the middle of the box. Soria was denied twice on close chances before Mazzoni was able to roll in the rebound from 15 out.

Senior Mitchell Pingree (Loomis, CA) netted his first goal of the season, a penalty kick, in the 87th minute to set the score at 3-0. Sophomore Christian Guzman (Sheridan, CA) drew the penalty after nifty spin move past a defender got him in the box, but a last resort sliding challenge brought Guzman to the ground, forcing the referee to signal for the penalty.

The win comes just a week after the Warriors opened up conference play with a 2-1 defeat in double overtime at Vanguard. Jessup's record improves to 6-3 overall, and the Warriors now sit at .500 in GSAC play with a record of 1-1. Jessup's goal differential has improved from -3 after their opening weekend to +15 (22 goals for to 7 goals conceded) where they now sit.

Jessup will hope to keep the momentum rolling as the GSAC schedule continues on Thursday when the Warriors head to the Bay Area to take on Menlo College at 4:00 p.m. Jessup defeated the Oaks 3-2 in their lone 2015 meeting.
