ROCKLIN, Calif. – After a stretch of strong play over the past two weeks, the William Jessup University Lady Warriors looked to keep their momentum rolling as they played host to San Diego Christian College. Jessup turned in two goals late in the first half, and held a strong defensive line late as they secured a 2-1 victory.
"We are extremely excited to walk away with the three points today," said head coach Rachel Constantini. "That game was all heart and grit, and we stuck to our game plan and we were able to climb out of the hole we were put in."
Jessup was able to set up their first goal of the day thanks to strong passing, as a counterattack pushed forward to find senior Michelle Sandage (Carson City, NV) out on the wing. Sandage crossed the ball into the box, where sophomore Janelle Schuette (La Puente, CA) was able to head the ball to the far post and put the Warriors on the board.
With just over a minute left in the half, Sandage again was able to facilitate the ball into a scoring situation, as she sent a perfect through ball to a running Isabel House (Ione, CA), who was able to find the back of the net to give Jessup the lead.
"We were able to get our wing backs into the attack," added Constantini. "(Sandage) did a great job getting involved in the attack and creating the opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net."
San Diego Christian College's lone goal of the day was scored in the 29th minute, after a foul in the box by Sandage set up a penalty kick. Danielle Kashou of the Hawks took the penalty and scored.
The Hawks had a number of close chances to even the match late. A breakaway attempt in the 67th minute produced a one-on-one chance at goal, and another chance was fired in from close range ten minutes later, but both attempts were denied by saves from senior
Brianna Evans (Roseville, CA).
"(Evans) has done an excellent job," stated Constantini on her goalkeeper. "To have three seniors leading the back line with (Evans) in goal, it lends us great experience and great heart to lead us to a win."
With the win, Jessup's first in conference play this season, the Warriors record in GSAC play sits at 1-4-1 for a total of four points.
The season continues on Monday, when the Warriors will host UC Santa Cruz at 4:00 p.m. in an exhibition match. Jessup will hit the road for a two match conference road trip this weekend, starting off at The Master's University on Thursday.
