SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Needing to climb their way back towards the top of the GSAC standings after back-to-back losses at home this past week, the Warriors started off a two-match road trip on Thursday at The Masters University. Jessup took an early lead, but two second half goals by the Mustangs started the road trip on a sour note, as the Warriors fell 2-1.
Jessup looked to be the more offensive team in the first half, as early on they dominated possession in their attacking third and came close on a number of chances to get on the board.
Finally, in the 31st minute, thanks to a bit of luck, the Warriors were able to finally find the back of the net and take a 1-0 lead. Senior
Alexander Thompson (Rancho Cordova, CA) sent in a free kick towards the six-yard box, where the ball bounced in front of a line of defenders, taking a big hop and bouncing into the goal.
The goal was Thompson's first of his collegiate career. Entering his third season with the Warriors, the senior captain appeared in his 42nd match as a Warrior Thursday.
It took until the 60th minute Thursday for the Mustangs to finally get on the board. On a corner kick, Luis Garcia-Sosa sent the ball into the box where Humphrey Mahowa was able to collect the ball and shoot it from 10 yards out into the left side of the goal.
With just under ten minutes remaining in the match, Mahowa netted his second goal of the day, placing the Mustangs ahead by the decisive score of 2-1. Zach Kilndworth sent a cross into the box towards Mahowa, who was able to beat junior goalkeeper
Robert Harmelink (Modesto, CA) to give his side the lead.
Harmelink got the starting nod in net for Jessup, playing all 90-minutes on Thursday while allowing the two second half goals and recording 3 saves. The Warriors fired off 9 shots, with just 3 going on goal in the loss.
After a dominating stretch where the Warriors took just one loss in a nine match span (7-1-1), Jessup has now lost three straight matches with just three more left on the schedule. Jessup sits at 7-6-1 on the season, with a record of 2-4-1 in GSAC play, totaling to seven points in the conference standings.
The Warriors will end the road trip on Saturday as they will play their final road match of the season, taking on Westmont College in Santa Barbara. This will be the first and only meeting between the two sides, and kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
