Jessup Takes Off in Overtime Victory, 97-94

Freshman Brandon Lindsey came off the bench to lead all scorers with 23 points

VALLEJO, Calif. - Down by five with less than thirty seconds left to play in regulations, the Warriors fought back to tie it up and force extra minutes against UC Merced at the Frank Dye Invitational hosted by Cal Maritime Academy on Friday night. Jessup duo, Chris Murry and Brandon Lindsey put in work to outscore the Bobcats 11-8 in overtime, advancing to 3-0 with the 97-94 win.

"All respect goes to UC Merced and Coach Pham as they competed throughout and tested us in every facet of the game," complemented head coach Lance Von Vogt. "The Frank Dye Classic is a terrific tourney against great competition that are well coached. This tournament is a great learning experience for our team every year. "

The Warriors had their work cut out for them as both teams exchanged the lead 12 times throughout the game, Bobcats led by as much as 9, Warriors led at one point by 5. After the first half the Warriors headed to the locker room down by one, using the opportunity to recharge and looking to dominate the second half.

With less than 30 seconds left to play in regulation the Bobcats led by five, but a quick field goal followed by a Jessup timeout put them within one possession. The Bobcats would answer back regaining their lead but not before Kelton Newman hit a second chance three from downtown to put the Warriors within two points.

Lindsey would tie it up for the Warriors at the 9 second mark followed by a big block from Michael Patterson to send it into overtime.

Murry led the Warriors in extra minutes with 6 of the 11 points, the other five credited to Lindsey from the line, making 5-of-8 down the stretch.

"Brandon Lindsey shows unbelievable poise and shot making ability for a freshman," stated Von Vogt. "His shot that sent the game into OT was big time and Chris Murry did what Chris Murry does by coming up big with threes and timely drives. "

Coming off the bench, Lindsey led all scorers with 23 points shooting over seventy percent from the field. He was accompanied by teammates Murry with 20 points and Michael Patterson with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. The Warrior bench outscored the Bobcat substitutions 45-28 shooting over 50 percent from the floor.

"We believe in the old adage of strength in numbers and tonight our depth proved invaluable scoring 45 points," Von Vogt commented, "and making big game changing plays throughout. "

The Warriors will be back in action next Friday as they host the 10th Annual Bill Holtz Classic in Warrior Arena Friday through Saturday with top competition on mark.

"Our annual Bill Holtz Classic is next Friday and Saturday. We have two nationally recognized programs coming in and we will need to be better in all phases of the game to be successful," Von Vogt concluded.
