ROCKLIN, Calif. – With ten seniors set to play the final collegiate match of their careers, the Jessup men's soccer team left everything out on the pitch Saturday, sending fans home with a smile on their face due to an incredible ending. Taking on Biola University for the final time as conference foes, the Warriors battled back from a two-goal deficit to win on Senior Day 3-2.
Senior
Jacob Rodriguez (Pacifica, CA) entered Saturday as Jessup's leading scorer with 9 goals. The senior forward ended his collegiate career in as flashy a style as he possibly could, as he scored his tenth goal of the season with just under two-minutes left in regulation, a shot from 25-yards out that ricocheted into the net, securing a season-ending victory for his squad.
Rodriguez's 10 goals set a new William Jessup University men's soccer record for most goals scored in a single season, breaking a mark of eight set last season by current senior
Justin Soria (Rocklin, CA).
Biola scored their first goal of the day in just the fifth minute, as Leonardo Contreras took a pass from Jarrett Pugh and dribbled into the box, firing a shot at the far post and finding the net for his sixth goal of the season. Pugh would add the Eagles' second goal of the day twenty minutes later as he converted on a penalty kick.
Trailing 2-0 at the half, the Warriors showed no signs of quit. In the 52nd minute, a corner kick produced the first tally of the day for Jessup. Senior
Alexander Thompson (Rancho Cordova, CA) swung a ball into the box where senior
Mitchell Pingree (Loomis, CA) got a head on it. The ball was blocked by a Biola defender, but the officials signaled that is had crossed the goal line.
In the 69th minute of the match, the Warriors evened up the score at 2-2 on a goal by sophomore
Omar Magana (Sacramento, CA). Senior
Michael Mazzoni (Rocklin, CA) sent in a cross from near the corner flag to Magana in the center of the box, who won a fight for the ball and hit it into the net on his first touch. The goal was Magana's sixth of the year.
Senior
Nicholas Schnable (Rocklin, CA) got the starting nod in his final collegiate game. The senior goalkeeper made two saves in route to a scoreless second half and a Jessup victory.
The Warriors say goodbye to an incredible senior class of 10 players: Schnable, Rodriguez, Thompson, Pingree, Soria, Mazzoni,
Brennan Entz (Auburn, CA),
Jose Hernandez (Ukiah, CA),
Joseph Tappero (Rocklin, CA), and
Christian Filbrun (Lincoln, CA).
Entz ends his career as the Warriors all-time leader in minutes played (4,787 minutes), and is tied with Uriel Moreno for the most games started (54) in program history as well. Soria leaves Jessup as the program's all-time leader in points (33) and assists (11).
