Warriors Fire Back from 0-2 to Defeat Arizona in Fifth Set

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Warriors played their second five-set match in two days, ending on a high note against Arizona Christian for their final home game on the Warrior Arena court for the season. Graduating one senior, Jennah Richmond couldn't have asked for a more exciting match to be a part of.
Richmond matched her season high 10 kills for the Warriors on senior day to put her with 488 career kills with three matches to go. The 10 kills push her to the second all-time in program history.
"Jennah Richmond is the type of player that only comes around once or twice in a coach's career," head coach Shasta Millhollin reflected. "I am thrilled to have had the honor of coaching such a talented athlete. Jennah is a stellar student and incredible volleyball player. Her work ethic is unparalleled, she is a natural leader, and most importantly- she always puts God first!"
The Warriors battled in the first two sets, but were unable to keep up with the enthusiasm and momentum the Firestorm possessed on their side to start the match. In the opening set Arizona capitalized with 14 kills to the Warriors 10 to take the set 18-25. The second the Warriors were motivated to fight harder but fell short 23-25 to go down 2-0 into the break.
"Being down 2-0 is a very tough spot to be in," said head coach Shasta Millhollin.  "At the break between sets 2 and 3 we talked about the importance of fighting back. We needed to refocus and regroup, and we did just that."
Coming out firing, the Warriors stepped ahead in the third set 5-1 before Arizona began to come back. Jessup would extend their lead going on a 9-0 run to force Firestorm to take both timeouts in that frame (14-5). The Warriors would allow them to gain back some points, but not enough, as Jessup took the set 25-15.
Still down 1-2, the Warriors continued the driving force from the third set to add extra points for the win and to push it to a final deciding game (26-24).
It was an intense final set with the Warriors down early and using both timeouts in hope to gain composure (8-11). Arizona Christian would add two more before the Warriors put points on the board to tie it up at 13, 14, 15 and 16.
Leading at the net and closing out the game was freshman Vendela Williams with 12 kills for the night and the attack to take the lead in the final set.  Michaela Zapata sealed the deal with a slam and the win over Arizona Christian 18-16.
"As a coaching staff, we are tremendously proud of the team for fighting back tonight and refusing to lose on our home court," Millhollin concluded. "This season has been a wild ride and we are proud to have finished our last home match with a win!"
Jessup will finish the season the road with three more contests next week.
