San Diego, Calif. - The young line-up in the women's volleyball team continues to go the distance with seasoned and tough competition in conference play. Coming back from a 0-2 deficit the Warriors defeated San Diego Christian in the third set, but fell short in the fourth as the Hawks took it 3-1. (18-25, 20-25, 25-23, 17-25)
Coming of an early season injury, senior
Jennah Richmond took the floor with teammates to compete against the Hawks on the road. Richmond led along side freshman
Taylor Jacky in the first set with 4 kills a piece, Richmond in her GSAC debut. The Warriors went tit-for-tap with the Hawks through the first half of the opening set before San Diego put it away with a 4-0 run solidifying the first set.
The second set continued to challenge the Warriors with 7 ties and an aggressive offense being displayed by the Hawks. Despite the battle put up by the Warriors, San Diego took the second set and a 2-0 lead going into the third.
"Although we had a slow start, the team fought hard to try to get some momentum," head coach
Shasta Millhollin said. "San Diego is a tough team with a lot of senior starters, so we knew it would be tough."
In true Warrior fashion the ladies didn't let up and throw in the towel, but rather rallied back in the third set to beat San Diego by two, 25-23. Jessup had 13 total kills in the third compared to the Hawks 10.
The momentum continued for both squads going into the fourth, and what would be the final set on the night. Jacky finished the night leading kills (13) followed by Richmond and
Makenzie Reeder-Esparza with 8 each. The Warriors would fall in the fourth set, 17-25 to finish the match 1-3, San Diego Christian's advantage.
"Our team fought super hard. We are continuing to work on starting tougher," Millhollin said. "Having Jennah back is awesome, she played great and we are so happy to have her back."
Jessup will travel to Arizona Christian tomorrow before hitting the hardwood one more time this trip with a 7pm start.
"Our team is getting tired of losing close matches. We are so close to breaking through the ceiling this season," Millhollin concluded. "We are due for a big win. Everyone is focused on getting things done on Saturday!"
