ROCKLIN, Calif. – For the second time in three days, the William Jessup men had to play all 110-minutes as their conference match with The Master's University was sent to double OT. Unlike that of Thursday, Jessup was able to secure the winning goal at the last possible second, as they pulled out a 2-1 victory.
Jessup entered Saturday's match with a perfect record on Jessup Field, as in their previous three home matches the Warriors held a record of 3-0 with a +11 goal differential.
A late first half goal in the 34th minute sent the Warriors into the half leading 1-0. Sophomore Conner Entz (Auburn, CA) took a pass from senior Justin Soria (Rocklin, CA) 20 yards out, and ripped a shot into the upper right corner for his second goal of the year.
The Warriors held on to the one goal advantage as long as they possibly could, but in the final seconds in the 89th minute Jonathan Brown of the Mustangs put his team on the board, evening the match and sending Jessup to overtime for the second straight match.
Both sides had a number of chances to score in both frames, with both sides' goalkeepers being put to the test. As the match drew into the 110th minute, it looked as if the Warriors would be ending the day with another draw, securing just one point in the conference standings.
However, with under thirty seconds left on the clock, a last second counterattack produced an opportunity, as Soria found senior Michael Mazzoni (Rocklin, CA) all alone with a one-on-one shot at goal. The Mustangs' goalkeeper came off his mark to try and clear the ball way, but Mazzoni got a shot off into the bottom right corner to end the match and erupting Jessup's bench.
Jessup now sits at a perfect 4-0 at home, and their overall record improves to 7-3-1 on the season. In conference play, Jessup holds a record of 2-1-1, adding up to seven points in the GSAC standings. As of Saturday afternoon, Menlo College leads the GSAC with 10 points.
The Warriors will get back on the pitch on Thursday, October 13, as they will play host to Vanguard University at 3:00 p.m. Vanguard currently sits at six points in the GSAC standings, and holds a 2-1 victory of Jessup in double overtime back on September 24.
