ROCKLIN, Calif. – With little time to rest after a Tuesday night victory over California Maritime, the Warriors welcomed another former CALPAC foe to Warrior Arena Thursday in the likes of the Simpson Redhawks. The Warriors started slow, but eventually found their gear as they cruised their way to 8-3, winning 62-49.
"Winning is good for the soul," said head coach Lance Von Vogt postgame. "As coaches we're not playing the scoreboard as much. We love to win because it allows us to dig into our guys a little bit more because they feel a little better about themselves. It allows you to work on some things that you need to address.
"We don't play by the scoreboard, and we're trying to go through a process. It's really about the guys in the locker room, and them understanding how to play their role within the team, and how to be great within their role, whatever that role may be."
It took Jessup five-minutes to finally score their first basket Thursday, as senior Chris Murry (Fremont, CA) connected on a three-point-play to make the score 4-3. Murry finished the night with 12-points, as the dynamic three-point shooter connected on 3-of-9 from deep.
Jessup would take their first lead of the night around the ten-minute mark, as senior Guillermo Nunez (Manteca, CA) came off the bench to hit back-to-back 3-pointers, placing the Warriors ahead 14-10. Nunez finished with just 6 points in 12 minutes.
The Warriors closed out the first half strong, as they went on a 24-6 run, taking a 32-16 advantage into the locker room.
"At times I thought that we looked really good, second team and first team," said Von Vogt. "At times I thought that we just didn't play smart basketball and were indecisive…Overall I think it was just a mixed bag, off and on all night like a facet."
Just under four-minutes into the final half, the run was still on, as the Warriors kicked off the second half with an 8-3 run capped off with a Murry three. Simpson finally caught some momentum, as after a timeout by the Redhawks, Simpson went on 6-0 run to trim the gap.
A late charge was not in the cards Thursday night for the Redhawks, as they shot just 34.5-percent from the field and turned the ball over 27 times. Jessup was able to open up the bench the majority of the second half, allowing each available member of the Warriors' bench to see playing time.
"We've been working on our press, and I think tonight our coverages were a lot better," Von Vogt said of his defense Tuesday. "We made them be indecisive, and a lot of (the turnovers) were (Simpson) dragging their feet because we trapped them.
"(Simpson's) game plan was to get (the ball) in low. We knew that, so we wanted to force them to have to make the lob to get the ball into the block. That's a tough pass to make."
Freshman Brandon Lindsey (Tyrone, GA) made some big baskets in the second half, finishing with 10 points in the win. Senior Elijah Lewis (Atlanta, GA) also added 10 points, as he also brought down 7 rebounds and recorded 2 steals.
Thursday's game, Jessup's second in three days, is the final one of the preseason schedule. The Warriors close out the preseason with a record of 8-3.
Jessup will get nine days off now until they next take the court, as that next matchup is set to take place on Saturday December 10 in La Mirada. The Warriors will open up the GSAC schedule with a tough opponent in the likes of defending conference champions Biola University.
