Home Court Advantage Motivates Warriors in 81-67 Win Over Bethesda

Warrior Duo, Chavez and VanDyke Post Program Record Breaking Numbers

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Continuing their offensive flight, the Lady Warriors picked up their third-straight win tonight taking on Bethesda University in Warrior Arena. Jessup not only defeated the Flames 81-67 improving to 5-1 on the season, but a pair of Warriors had record setting numbers to put their name in Jessup women's basketball history book.

"It was great to be back in front of our home crowd!  I'm excited that we showed improvement in the month since our first contest against Bethesda," head coach Kurt Westendorp said.

Junior Rona Chavez started the game strong with a three to crack the scoreboard, but it didn't stop there. In the first quarter alone the 5'5" guard recorded three of her six baskets from beyond the arc.

Chavez is tied for first for most three-pointers made in a single game with Ashley Rose posting her 6 three's in 2011, 2013 and 2014.

"Rona really gave us a spark to kick off the game from behind the arc," Westendorp commented. "We did a great job moving the ball and Rona took advantage of the clean looks."

The Warriors took a comfortable 8-point lead going into the second quarter. Opening the second quarter was leading scorer and assists leader, Emilee VanDyke, with a jumper to extend the lead to double figures.

The 6'3" sophomore would prove to be an offensive threat posting a double-double, just one assist shy of a triple-double. VanDyke finished the game with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 9 assists. Her assists on the night (9) is the in school history for a single-game outing.

Coach Westendorp approved of her level of play for the night,"I'm really proud of the way Emilee stepped up tonight in a variety of ways.  It's not often that your center sets an assist record, but she really saw the floor well from the middle of their zone."

At the half, the Warriors would head to the locker room with a six-point advantage over the Flames (39-33). Jessup would continue to hold the lead, with the largest margin of the third quarter coming with 2:33 left to play as Chavez hit her sixth three of the night for the 12-point lead over Bethesda.

The fourth quarter had a strong start for the Warriors, taking the lead to as much as 20 points when Tyler Swycinsky hit a pair of free throws for the 74-54 edge. But Bethesda continue to battle and would cut the lead as little as 9 with 8 minutes left in regulations.

Ashlyn Jones continued to show a presence in the key with a double-double, 15 points and 10 rebounds. The junior forward is averaging 17.9 points per game this season.

Jessup would finish strong with senior leader, Olivia Luu shooting 7-8 from the line down the stretch to help the Warriors solidify the 81-67 victory over Bethesda.

"I feel very good about the progress we are making as we move toward conference play.  We still have lots of areas to tighten up," Westendorp concluded, "but I'm eager for the challenge GSAC play will bring.

The Warriors will be back on home court on Saturday to host UC Merced before heading into conference play the following Saturday on the road against Biola.
