Jessup Falls to NCAA Division I UC Davis 87-64 in Exhibition

Morrison Finishes with Game High 7 Rebounds, 24-5 Aggies Run Too Much to Come Back From

DAVIS, Calif. – One week removed from a victory over the NAIA's No. 1 ranked team, the Warriors hit the court Saturday just an hour from home as they took on the NCAA Division I level UC Davis Aggies. A big first half run was too much for the Warriors to overcome, as they dropped the exhibition by the final score of 87-64.

"I believe it is always great to challenge teams that when you are coming in you know you'll have to play your best," head coach Lance Von Vogt said postgame. "UC Davis is a great Big West program. Coach (Jim) Les does a great job. This gave us a great opportunity to work against a top rate team, a top rate defense, and a top rate shooting team.

"I think if we look at the film and asses everything that happened we can take a lot of benefits from this."

Jessup opened the game on a strong note, as after a defensive stop senior Cody Wilcox (Grass Valley, CA) connected from deep on Jessup's first possession. The Warriors hit 3-pointers on their first two shots Saturday, as freshman Brandon Lindsey's (Tyrone, GA) first basket was changed to a three after official review.
Lindsey scored 10 points in the opening half, as the speedy freshman shot 3-of-7 from the field. The Warriors only had one trip to the line in the first half, as it was Lindsey who knocked down the two free throws.

UC Davis pulled away from the Warriors in the middle stretches of the first half. The Warriors were unable to find any success at the basket over a near five-minute stretch, as the Aggies pushed their way to a 24-5 run.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by seniors Tahron Morrison (Fairfield, CA) and Chris Murry (Fremont, CA) looked to be building some momentum for the Warriors, but the Aggie attack just could not be stopped. The Warriors got in early trouble Saturday as they committed 9 first half fouls, and UC Davis made Jessup pay as they went 11-of-12 from the line in the first 20-minutes.

"I believe Tahron (Morrison) is just starting to get his legs under him," added Von Vogt on his senior forward. "He missed the first few games of the season, and now he's rolling. I think this game gives him an understanding of how good he can be in the paint if he sets his mind to it. Tahron is just going to get better and better."

The Aggies opened the second half in a similar fashion to that of the first. After Lindsey connected on a contest layup on Jessup's first half, UC Davis followed with an 11-4 run to push their lead to 58-32. The Warriors countered the Aggie run with an 10-0 run of their own, with Morrison and junior Christian Jones (Newport News, VA) combining for all the scoring during that stretch.

Jones and Morrison each turned in strong second half performances. After entering the half with just 3 points, Jones finished the game shooting 4-of-10 for 10 points. Morrison too entered the break with just 3 points, and closed out the game with a team high 13 and a game high 7 rebounds.
Senior Micheal Patterson (Amarillo, TX) provided a spark of adrenaline for the Jessup offense off the bench. The guard connected on an alley-oop assisted by Lindsey in the first half, and then erupted the Warriors' bench late in the game Saturday with a leaping high dunk in transition. Patterson closed the game with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

"I think that the sky is the limit for Micheal (Patterson)," Von Vogt said. "Honestly he is still reaching his potential. He's improving every day in practice, he's working hard, and I think that before the year we're going to see an even more improved Micheal. Hes extremely important to our team."
Murry finished the day with 11 points, adding 3 rebounds and 3 assists. Lindsey scored just two points in the closing 20-minutes to finish with 12. The Warriors shot 35.4-percent on the day from the field.

For the Aggies, Chima Monke led all scorers with 18 points and was tied for a team high 6 rebounds. Lawrence White added 14 points, Siler Schneider added 12, and J.T. Adenrele closed with 10 for UC Davis' players in double figures.

The Warriors will have two more games on the schedule before Christmas and New Year's Eve, as Jessup is set to travel to Chandler, Arizona for a two-game tournament this upcoming week. The Warriors will take on Olivet Nazarene University (Illinois) on December 20, and then Montana State University-Northern the next morning. Jessup returns home to take on Vanguard on January 5.
