Lady Warriors Drop Sixth Straight, Fall 66-62 to Cal Maritime

Corona and Rodriguez Finish with Double-Doubles, Finish Year 8-1 vs CALPAC

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Taking a break from their busy and tough GSAC schedule, the Lady Warriors welcomed the California Maritime Academy Keelhaulers to the Warrior Arena for a non-conference matchup. After a battle down to the wire, the Warriors finished on the wrong end of a tough call, going home with their sixth-straight loss, falling 66-62.

Jessup seemed to have control of the game early on, as their defense did a great job in halting the Keelhaulers from the field. However, the Warriors would get themselves in early foul trouble, sending Maritime's Haleigh Lis to the line three times in the first half, where she connected on 4-of-6. The four free throws were half of Maritime's first quarter points, as Jessup led 12-8.

The second quarter was an offensive drop off for Jessup, as the shots stopped falling, and the Kellhaulers began to connect on their opportunities from the field. A quick Maritime run right from the start set the tone, as Jessup was outscored 21-8 in the period to enter the half trailing by nine.

Neither side saw very many points come from outside the three-point-arc, as the two sides combined to go just 1-for-18 from deep in the first half, with the Keelhaulers owning the only made deep ball. Jessup shot just 33-percent (9-for-27) in the first half, while Maritime made 10-of-13 (76.9-percent) from the free-throw-line.

Quarter three was where Jessup began to take over and assert their dominance, as they're main avenue of scoring came on second chance opportunities. Jessup finished the game with 12 second chance points, all thanks to 13 offensive rebounds, four of which came from senior Diana Corona (Porterville, CA). Jessup took control of the quarter, outscoring the Keelhaulers 23-11 to take a three point lead into the fourth.

In the fourth, both sides threw punch after punch as neither side wanted to leave with a loss. A big factor in Jessup's scoring in the fourth finally came from the deep ball, as they saw made 3-pointers from freshman Olivia Luu (Riverside, CA), senior Alexandra Rodrigues (Rocklin, CA), and senior Megan Scully (Newark, CA).

Trailing late, the Warriors got a key three pointer from Luu to trim the lead to two. Jessup fouled on the ensuing possession, and got a huge break as Maritime missed both free throws, giving Jessup the ball with 12 seconds and a chance to either win, or send the game to overtime. After a Keelhauler foul, Luu would be called for an offensive foul, giving the ball back to Maritime and securing another Jessup loss.

Rodriguez led the way offensively for the Warriors, finishing with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her double-double. Corona recorded 12 points and 13 boards, and Scully finished with 15 points before fouling out. For Maritime, it was Jennifer Keys who led all scorers with 17 points.

The Warriors will now shift back towards conference play, as they travel to Atherton on Tuesday to take on Menlo College. This will be the second meeting between the GSAC's two newest squads, with the Warriors coming out on top in their previous meeting back in December. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
