REDDING, Calif. - The Warriors women's volleyball team took a short trip north to the Simpson University Redhawks to finish out non-conference matches for the week before taking on conference foes this weekend. It was a true testament tonight that the team steps up whenever needed, sweeping the Redhawks with their unfamiliar line-up.
"Everyone stepped up and contributed tonight against our tough, and long time rival Simpson," head coach Shasta Millhollin reflected.
The Warriors didn't jump ahead in the first set until teams were locked at 9 a piece. Junior transfer Audrey Vaughn broke it up with a kill to put the Warriors ahead, just one of her 6 on the night. The Redhawks continued to compete meeting the Warriors with an even score at 12 and 14 before Jessup jumped out to take set one (25-23).
Mirroring the first set to kick it off, teams exchanged points through the beginning of the second set. The Warriors went on a 6-0 run leading Simpson 14-7, taking charge with a pair of service aces was freshman Alicia Borges. The Redhawks matched that run with their own to come back within four to finish the set, but the Warriors out ran the Redhawks beating them 25-22, taking the lead two sets to one.
"We knew they would be solid on defense and they were, but we stayed in our system," Millhollin commented.
Carrying their momentum through the break, Jessup continued at an easy pace to start the third set and gained endurance finishing the set and match strong. Tied at 10-10 the Warriors kicked it into gear to finish the game on a 15-3 run with a final, 25-13 to win the game.
"We are ready to go for more conference matches this weekend," Millhollin expressed. "We are 5-5 headed into the weekend."
The Warriors will head to southern California to take on Hope International on Friday at 7pm and Biola University on Saturday at 3pm.
