Warriors Top Sierra Nevada 5-0 for Fourth Straight Victory

Jessup Earns Second Straight Clean Sheet, Hernandez Scores in Fourth Consecutive Match

ROCKLIN, Calif. – Coming off a shutout victory against Dominican last week, the William Jessup men's soccer squad took the pitch Tuesday to play host to Sierra Nevada College. Jessup continued their hot play as of late, and much like their meeting last season, the Warriors were victorious by the final of 5-0.

Jessup got their first goal of the game just about twenty minutes in when senior Jose Hernandez (Ukiah, CA) converted on a penalty for his fifth goal of the year. The penalty was awarded after junior Victor Pacay was brought to the ground in the box on a rough challenge. The goal makes it now four straight matches in which Hernandez has scored.

With just about two minutes left in the first half, the Warriors again were aided by a Sierra Nevada foul as it set up a free kick in striking distance. Sophomore Christian Guzman (Sheridan, CA) drove the free kick home for his first goal as a Warrior, making it 2-0.

The Warriors added the scoring party in the second half, with the third goal of the day coming in the 53rd minute by sophomore Omar Magana (Sacramento, CA). The goal was Magana's first of his collegiate career, and was assisted by senior Michael Mazzoni (Rocklin, CA).

Magana returned the favor to his teammate Mazzoni just over fifteen minutes later, as a Magana pass set up a goal for Mazzoni, making the Jessup lead now 4-0. Jessup added their final goal of the day in the 75th minute of play as Hernandez beat the keeper on a one-on-one opportunity, solidifying the victory at 5-0.

With the win, Jessup now pushes their win streak to four after starting the season with rough back-to-back losses at San Francisco State University. Jessup is now 4-2 on the year as conference season approaches.

In goal for Jessup on Tuesday was a combined effort by senior Nicholas Schnable (Rocklin, CA) and junior Robert Harmelink (Modesto, CA). Schnable played the first half, allowing no goals while recording 3 saves. Harmelink replaced Schnable for the second half, and allowed no goals while recording 2 saves.

Jessup will now get a few days off after the win to prepare for their next match, as they are set to travel to Southern California this weekend to start GSAC play. The Warriors will take on Vanguard University on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
