Warriors Pick up Their First Win Behind 4-1 Tally over UC Merced

Mazzoni Records Hat Trick of Assists, Lazaga Earns First Win as Men’s Soccer Head Coach

MERCED, Calif. – Coming off of a rough weekend in San Francisco which saw Jessup lose their first two matches of the season and fail to score a goal, the Warriors looked fired up on Tuesday as they hit the road to take on UC Merced. The scoring drought that had plagued Jessup the past weekend came to an abrupt end as the Warriors fired their way to a 4-1 win over the host Bobcats.

The first offensive strike of the match came in just the 20th minute, as senior Jose Hernandez (Ukiah, CA) netted the first goal of the 2016 campaign off of an assist from senior Michael Mazzoni (Rocklin, CA). Just seven minutes later, the Warriors again found the back of the net to make it 2-0 as senior Jacob Rodriguez (Pacifica, CA) scored off an assist from sophomore Adolfo Guzman (Las Vegas, NV).

In goal for the first half Tuesday was sophomore Robert Harmelink (Modesto, CA). Making his third start in a row, Harmelink recorded just one save while holding the Bobcats scoreless. Harmelink gets credited for the win, the first of his collegiate career.

Jessup kept up the offensive pressure at the start of the second half, netting their third goal of the day to increase the lead to 3-0. Senior Justin Soria (Rocklin, CA), Jessup's leading goal scorer from 2015, scored the third tally coming in the 63rd minute. Four minutes later the Warriors made it 4-0 as Rodriguez scored his second goal of the day. Both goals were assisted by Mazzoni, giving him a hat trick on the day.

UC Merced finally was able to get on the board late in the 83rd minute, ending Jessup's hopes of a shutout victory. Manuel Romero scored off an assist from Christian Basulto.

Senior Nick Schnable (Rocklin, CA) started the second half in goal for Jessup, allowing no goals while recording 2 saves. Sophomore Nick Garcia (Sacramento, CA) came in to replace Schnable, making his collegiate debut. Garcia allowed the lone goal of the day while recording a save in the process.

Following the victory, the Warriors will finally get to return to the friendly confines of Jessup Field for their official home opener which is slated to take place on Friday against Warner Pacific College. Kickoff Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m., and will be the first of a three-match home stand.
