PHOENIX, Ariz. – Playing their first game as the leading team in the GSAC, the Warriors continued their short two-game road trip in Arizona on Saturday with a matinee performance against the Arizona Christian University Firestorm. A late comeback, capped off with a last second shot secured the Warriors an 81-79 victory.
Freshman
Brandon Lindsey (Tyrone, GA) was the star of the game in the final minute Saturday. With Jessup trailing by two, Lindsey connected on a contested fade away jumper to equalize the game at 79-79. After a shot clock violation on the Firestorm's next possession, Lindsey would drive to the lane and score with just over a second remaining to secure the win.
Lindsey finished the day with a team high 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Saturday's game was a showcase of three-point shooting. The Firestorm connected 13 times from deep on 27 attempts. The Warriors, led by three deep balls from seniors
Chris Murry (Fremont, CA) and
Kelton Newman (Elk Grove, CA), shot 45.8-percent (11-for-24) from three.
The first half Saturday was a battle of runs. The Warriors opened the game with an early lead, but a 7-0 Firestorm run gave ACU the lead at 21-18. Jessup countered with an 8-3 to take a 26-24 advantage, but am 8-0 run by the Firestorm again put Jessup behind as they entered the half trailing 40-36.
A 3-pointer by Murry put Jessup ahead 46-45 early in the second half, but the Warriors were unable to build any momentum as each lead changing basket was countered with a Firestorm basket of their own to retake the lead.
Trailing by five late, the Warriors gained a spark when Newman and Murry connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to put Jessup ahead 76-75.
Murry closed the game with 13 points and 3 assists. Newman added 12 points and 5 rebounds in his 24 minutes of play off the bench.
