Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Matthew Horrocks

Buzzer Beater Ends Jessup Comeback Bid in 73-70 Loss to Menlo College

Warriors Battle Back from 13-Point Deficit in First Game Since December 21

ATHERTON, Calif., - Hitting the court for the first time in 2017, the William Jessup University men's basketball program was in the Bay Area Tuesday to take on conference foes Menlo College. After a great comeback bid, a last second shot was the dagger in the heart as the Oaks took the win, 73-70.

Jessup embarked on an incredible comeback in the final minutes of the second half. Trailing by as much as 13, the Warriors pushed for a 10-0 run that trimmed the Menlo advantage to just three.

Tuesday's second half was filled with big runs, as after the two sides entered the break tied at 30-30, the Warriors kicked off the second frame with a 7-0 run. The Oaks would quickly counter out of a timeout with a 15-4 run that saw them retake the lead.

Freshman Brandon Lindsey (Tyrone, GA) and senior Chris Murry (Fremont, CA) would hit 3-pointers in the final 90-seconds to equalize the game at 70-70. After an Oaks' turnover, the Warriors had the ball with 13-seconds remaining, but a missed Lindsey layup gave Menlo enough time for one final shot.

Jeremiah Testa took a pass from Ben Graham in the corner, and Testa's last second 3-pointer found nothing but net to give the Oaks the win. Testa scored a game high 25 points Tuesday.

Leading offensively for Jessup was senior Micheal Patterson (Amarillo, TX). Patterson scored 13 points in his 28 minutes off of the bench, and came up big in the first half with a three-point-play to give Jessup the lead.

Patterson also added some flash in the passing game Tuesday, as he found junior Sherman Simpson (Los Angeles, CA) cutting to the basket with a beautiful behind the back pass.

After hitting just one shot from deep in the first half, Murry closed the game with 12 points while going 4-of-10 from three-point. The Warriors as a team shot just 26.3-percent from the field in the game.

Tuesday's loss was Jessup's first game since a December 21 loss to Montana State University-Northern. Both teams showed rust in the first half, as neither side was able to pull away or create any sizable advantages. Jessup's largest first half lead was just three points.

With the loss, the Warriors fall to 11-5 overall on the season and 1-1 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The Oaks too hold a GSAC record of 1-1.
Jessup will play host to Vanguard University on Thursday night for their first home conference game of the season. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
