ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Warriors continued their success on Horton Court Monday taking on Simpson University where it was a record-setting night as they beat the Redhawks 107-77 advancing to 2-0 and setting a school record for most points scored.
"I thought the start of the game is exactly how we want to be, it didn't matter who we put in, everyone was ready to go," head coach
Lance Von Vogt said. "They did a good job defensively and offensively we were patient and we attacked the paint, resulting in some wide open threes, which we knocked down."Â
From tipoff, Jessup scored six-straight three-pointers in the first 7 minutes of play with a pair belonging to sophomore
Wilson LaShells and three delivered by junior transfer
Luis Medearis to go up 18-7. Continuing their hot streak from beyond the arc, the Warriors closed out the first half going 11-16, shooting 68.8% from downtown which was contributed by six different players for the 58-25 advantage heading into halftime.
"We built up a big lead in the first half so going into the second half we were able to play everyone on the roster giving everyone minutes," Von Vogt assured, "It was a good night for us."
The heat continued to fly from deep as sophomore
Brandon Lindsey started the second half with his second three of the game followed by another shortly after to go 3-4 from beyond the arc for a total 17 points with 6 assists leading the Warriors.
In the final 20 minutes of play, Jessup went 6-9 for a total 17-25 on the night from the three-point line, breaking the program record for most three's made, as well as best three-point percentage (68%).
While successful on the offensive end, the Warriors continue to improve defensively holding the Redhawks to just one of six from the arc in the first half, and an overall five for the game.
Coach Von Vogt is pleased with the defensive efforts but believes there is always room for growth. "On the defensive side, we are really working on guarding that three-point line because it is such a critical part of the game. We showed some improvement tonight since our first game where we gave up nine threes and tonight we held them to five, just one in the first half."
A total five players were in double-figure against the Redhawks with Lindsey leading the pack (17), followed by Medearis going 5-5 from long range for a total 15 points, as well as
Leondre Lintz snagging 15 points with two assists. Rounding out the double digits was
Antonio Lewis and LaShells both with 14 a piece.
"It was great to see us compete out on the floor and play extremely well for about 25 minutes of the game. Our next step is to play a full 40-minute game, Von Vogt reflected. "We aim to raise the bar of what we are capable of every time we step on the floor and tonight we were able to raise the bar in a few areas. The great thing is I believe this group has the capacity to be much better than they were tonight."
The Warriors will continue their home stretch later this week hosting the Bill Holtz Classic on Friday and Saturday in Warrior Arena. First, the Warriors will face Bethesda University on Friday at 7pm followed by Oregon Tech on Saturday at 5 pm.
