REDDING, Calif. - The men's basketball team took their talents up the road to face their first away-from-home opponent, Simpson University for a late Monday night game. Slow out the gate, the Warriors would have to battle down the stretch to keep their perfect season alive, and that they did with a 71-67 edge over the Red Hawks, advancing to 6-0.
"It was great to see the guys respond to adversity tonight on the road with Simpson playing with great energy and effort," head coach Lance Von Vogt commented after the game. "Overall, I? believe this game will pay dividends once we get into league play."
The Warriors would hit the board first with an early lead thanks to junior Keith Phillips knocking down a pair of three from beyond the arc for an 8-2 advantage. But the Red Hawks would chip away at the Warrior's front taking their first lead of the game at the 10-minute mark (15-14).Â
Wilson LaShells did not let that last long as he laid one in for the 17-14 advantage followed by a nearly four-minute slump with neither team scoring.
Both teams would exchange leads five more times before the Warriors jumped in front on a 6-0 run, that would soon be answered back by Simpson for their own flight and a buzzer-beater to head into the locker room for the break with a 35-33 advantage over Jessup.
Von Vogt prepared his team during halftime on the adjustments that needed to made, "We had to make some halftime adjustments because Simpson was dictating the tempo and style of the game. They were the aggressors up until that point."
The second half would mirror the first as the Warriors and Red Hawks exchanged leads four more times with Jessup holding the largest lead of 10 (66-56) with just over five minutes to play in regulation. But the Warriors didn't get too comfortable as Simpson again came back within two points with 30-seconds to play.
Antonio Lewis would go 3-4 down the stretch to solidify the victory for the Warriors 71-67 over the Red Hawks in their first road game of the season.
Phillips posted his third double-double in a row with an impressive 14 points to lead the Warriors accompanied by 12 boards. Also finishing in double figures were teammates Brandon Lindsey (12), Tate DeLaVeaga (11) and Luis Medearis (10).Â
The Warriors will continue their road quest later this week heading to the Lithia Oregon Tech Classic for two games, first against Southern Oregon at 3 pm on Friday, followed by Oregon Tech on Saturday at 7:30 pm.
