KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - In their second game of the Lithia Oregon Tech Classic in Klamath Falls, the William Jessup women's basketball team was unable to mount a comeback as they fell 70-51 to Southern Oregon.
Â
A full court press and high defensive pressure kept the Lady Warriors on their toes all game long, as Jessup managed to put up just 46 field goal attempts in the contest. The Lady Raiders forced Jessup to commit a season-high 27 turnovers.
Â
Despite losing their opening game of the tournament, the Lady Warriors came out of the chute with a renewed energy from the opening tip-off. In a defensive-minded start by both teams, the Warriors ended the opening quarter on a 10-3 run to take an early six-point lead.
Â
However, the second quarter was another story as the Lady Raiders found their stroke from behind the arc. The Raiders knocked down four three-pointers in the period and held the Warriors to just 32 percent shooting in the first half.
Â
The Warriors went into halftime facing a 27-24 deficit.
Â
Whatever halftime speech the Lady Raiders had rejuvenated their defense to an even greater level.
Â
Using their full-court press, the Raiders forced five turnovers to start the second half before Emilee VanDyke was finally able to score the Warriors' first points after going scoreless for the first 3 minutes and 35 seconds.
Â
The turnover total reached eight in the third quarter, putting the Lady Warriors in a 46-32 hole going into the fourth.
Â
In an effort to ramp up one last defensive surge, the Warriors were unable to stop the SOU fastbreak charge in the final quarter. Another Warrior turnover led to yet another easy Raiders layup, stretching the lead to 50-35 with 8 minutes left in the game.
Â
The Warriors then went on a little 9-3 run to trim the lead to single-digits, but it would be all for not as the Raiders would score 24 points in the final period to take home the victory.
Â
Ashlyn Jones led the Warriors with eight points and five rebounds, while Jessica Armstrong and Emilee VanDyke each tallied eight points. Janelle Luu corralled a career-high 14 rebounds.
Â
The Lady Warriors will head back home to face off with UC Merced in a non-conference matchup at 5:30pm on Tuesday.
