ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Jessup men's basketball team wrapped up their final game of the William Jessup Classic on Saturday afternoon in a 104-70 victory over New Hope Christian College, remaining undefeated on Horton Court in their 9 contests thus far and improving to 11-2 overall.
"Today was a terrific team effort with everyone making solid contributions," said head coach
Lance Von Vogt.
A little slower than normal out the gate, the Deacons pressured the Warriors forcing turnovers but at the midway point, New Hope called a timeout creating energy for the Warriors coming off an
Antonio Lewis layup to tie it up (21-21).
From that point, the Warriors went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good with 8-minutes remaining in the first half with a three-pointer by
Keith Phillips from
Tate DeLaVeaga.
In the final 10 minutes, the Warriors only allowed the Deacons to score 10-points while creating separation and scoring 28 of their own points to head into the break with a 49-31 lead.
"Keith and Tone (Antonio) both brought great energy while Brandon (Lindsey) did a great job leading the team," Von Vogt reflected. "Our wings led by (Wilson) LaShells, (Luis) Medearis and DeLaVeaga all made great contributions scoring, rebounding and sharing the ball."
Phillips sparked the second half with an and-one opportunity to set the tone for the remainder of the game. Philips led the Warriors on the night in his 24-minute outing with 25 points and 10 rebounds, with four assists, his fourth double-double of the season.
Down the stretch, the Warriors would end in a slam sesh tipped-off by Phillips and followed by a pair from
Oliver Amajoyi and one from LaShells to end the night.
Behind Phillips the Warriors had a trio in double figures with Medearis closing out with 17 points,
Antonio Lewis finishing with his third double-double (17 points and 10 boards) and LaShells with 10 points.
The Warriors will look to continue their five-game winning streak with a matchup on Tuesday at 2 pm facing the nationally recognized Southern Oregon in Warrior Arena.Â
"We have a short turn around after these three games in three days to compete against a nationally ranked Southern Oregon squad on Tuesday afternoon," Von Vogt said. "That game is our last before Christmas and we want to finish out this first semester of basketball in great fashion."
