ROCKLIN, Calif. – Entering the night on the wrong end of a four-game losing skid, the Warriors welcomed the San Diego Christian Hawks to Warrior Arena Saturday Night. With Warrior Arena packed for Homecoming, the Warriors put on a show as they got back to their winning ways, 73-64.
One of the biggest sparks to Jessup's victory Saturday was that of junior
Sherman Simpson (Los Angeles, CA). Simpson played 16-minutes off the bench, and provided 6 points, 3 rebounds, and two huge second-half blocks.
Simpson's blocks erupted the crowd in Warrior Arena, but the loudest cheer of the night came in the second half when Simpson soared through the air to finish off an alley-oop from junior
Christian Jones (Newport News, CA).
"(
Sherman Simpson) is back to being his normal self, I think we saw that on the alley-oop tonight," said head coach
Lance Von Vogt of Simpson, who had to miss time this winter due to an injury.
Jessup's bench provided 37 points in the victory. Freshman
Wilson LaShells (Danville, CA) went a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range, including one at the final buzzer. Another freshman,
Chancellor Ortega (Sebastopol, CA) fired up the crowd with slam dunks on back-to-back-possessions.
"That was probably the best part of the game right there," Von Vogt said of the Ortega's dunks and the closing three by LaShells.
Senior
Elijah Lewis flirted with a triple-double, finishing with the double-double instead of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lewis also added 7 assists, and 7 of his rebounds came on the offensive end as the Warriors finished with 15 total offensive boards.
Also finishing with 12 points for Jessup was senior
Tahron Morrison (Fairfield, CA). Morrison also added 7 rebounds.
San Diego Christian led at the break Thursday, 31-29, largely due to a 13-4 run in the closing stretches of the first half.
"I wrote a few words on the board and asked the guys if we looked like those words mean," said Von Vogt of his halftime message. "I told them a couple things we needed to correct, and asked them if they were willing to embody the words that we hold dear as our core and what we were all about."
"It's time for action. It's February, not November."
A 45.7-percent showing from the field in the closing 20-minutes by the Warriors, as opposed to a 32.1-percent clip from the Hawks played a large role in Jessup outscoring their opponents by 11 in the final half.
Isaiah Milan off the Hawks led all scorers with 15 points, while Luis Salgado finished in double-figures as well with 13.
The win pushes Jessup's record overall on the season to 17-9, with their conference record in Golden State Athletic Conference play moving to 7-5.
Jessup has just one more road trip left in the regular season, as they will travel to The Master's University (Thursday) and Westmont College (Saturday) this upcoming week. The Warriors hold a win on Westmont already, with Master's holding a victory over the Warriors in their lone meeting so far.
