LINCOLN, Calif. – Jessup got back on their home field of McBean Park in Lincoln Tuesday as they hosted the Menlo College Oaks for a Valentine's Day matinee. After the Warriors looked to have a big rally in place in just the first inning, it was the Menlo offense that struck big as the Oaks came out on top by the score of 14-4.
In just the first inning Tuesday, the Warriors found themselves in comfortable position with the bases loaded and nobody out. After sophomore Joshua Duitsman (Bakersfield, CA) was hit by a pitch, and sophomore Garrett Case (Carmichael, CA) drew a walk, the Warriors found themselves up 2-0. Jessup would plate just the two runs while no batter reached base via hit in the inning.
Starting on the mound for Menlo Tuesday was Mack Boone, and Jessup got to him early as Boone's day was cut shot after just 0.1 innings of work. The Oaks would use eight relievers over a combined 8.2 innings, with Zechariah Jarrard picking up the victory.
Menlo would take the lead for good in the third as they plated five runs, two of which scored on a home run by that barely cleared the left field fence. The big blow Tuesday came in the top of the eighth, as the Oaks left the park twice in route to a seven-run inning.
Jessup's other runs would come in the fourth when sophomore Coleman Petit (Palo Cedro, CA) drove in a run with a two-out single up the middle. The fourth and final run of the day came off an RBI groundout by junior Alex Nasukiewicz (Sacramento, CA) in the bottom of the seventh.
Junior Justin Vlotho (Lemoore, CA) got the start for the Warriors. After retiring the first seven he faced, Vlotho would get hit hard in the third, only lasting 2.2 innings in route to receiving the loss. The Warriors would use five relievers of their own over 6.1 innings of work. The bullpen would allow 10 runs (9 earned).
The Warriors will return to the diamond this weekend as they kick off the home portion of the conference schedule with a three-game series against Arizona Christian University. The series will begin with one game on Friday, followed with a doubleheader on Saturday. All games will take place at McBean Park in Lincoln.
