SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Lady Warrior women's softball team headed on their final long road series to Southern California with San Diego Christian being the first stop in today's doubleheader. With a season-record three home runs in game one, the Warriors defeated the Hawks 3-2, but the late momentum by San Diego carried over to game two where they rallied to a 4-1 victory over the Warriors.
GAME ONE
With each run coming in off solo home runs, the Warriors started the trend in the bottom of the second inning with a leadoff bomb over the left field fence by
Taya Ruiz. Just one batter later, one out on the board, starting pitcher
Shelbi Graifman used her strength in the box to send one over the centerfield fence for an early 2-0 lead over the Hawks.
It wouldn't be until the final inning that the Warriors would add another run with Graifman hitting her second one of the game to start the seventh inning. Up until the seventh inning junior pitcher, Graifman, held the Hawks scoreless with only three hits and seven strikeouts. But the Hawks wanted in on the action too and added their names to the home run club with a inning opener and a two-out rally homerun to make it 3-2 Jessup lead.
Graifman retired the final out with a popup to shortstop securing the Warriors 3-2 victory in game one over the San Diego Hawks and receiving her 8th win of the season from the mound.
GAME TWO
Continuing the seventh inning momentum, the Hawks took flight with three hits in the first inning to score the first run, while leaving three runners stranded against starting pitcher for the Warriors, freshman
Mariah Gonzalez.
The Warriors would leave 7 runners on base between the first and the fourth inning, unable to transfer the hits to runs. Both in the third (1) and fourth (2) inning the Hawks would add to the box score for a 4-0 lead before the Warriors answered back.
In the top of the fifth inning
Corina Salinas led the Warriors with a double to center field, as
Natalie Basaldua hit the RBI single to score Salinas to make it 4-1 with two innings to play. Salinas would strike again in the bottom of the seventh with her second double of the game looking to start the rally but the Warriors weren't able to follow the lead falling in game two 4-1 for a series split with the Hawks.
Jessup will take on nationally ranked Hope International on Saturday in Fullerton, Calif. with the doubleheader starting at 12pm.
