ROCKLIN, Calif. - With a late goal in the 86th-minute by the Warriors, the women's soccer team battled to the finish hoping to tie it up before regulation expired against UC Merced, but the Bobcats early pair of goals sealed the deal for the 2-1 victory over Jessup.
"We did not get the result we were looking for today. It was great to see us fight back and change our mentality at the half but we still have a lot of work to do in front of the goal before conference begins," head coach
Rachel Constantini reflected.
The Bobcats would score first in the 20th-minute in a one-on-one situation with transfer defender for the Warriors
Camille Cavey, at this point already having had five shots sent her way, with one save.
Not too much later they would tack on another goal in the 27th-minute to take a 2-0 lead with plenty of time left on the clock for the Warriors to score.
The Bobcats outshot the Warriors in the first half, 14-4, but the tables turned after the break as the Warriors put the pressure on UC Merced out shooting them 9-8 in the final 45 minutes.
Motivated out the gate, the Warriors had two early shots by
Mikayla English and
Hannah Lettington off a corner from
Kailee Soares, but were unable to break it through the defense to get on the board.
They would continue to challenge the Bobcat's keeper by pressuring the ball up, making a connection in the 83rd minute. Senior
Marissa Sanders took the shot that scored the lone goal for the Warriors, her second goal of the season, set up by teammates English and Lettington.
With plenty of time left on the clock, the Warriors had equal opportunity to even it up but came up short as the time expired in a 2-1 loss. Cavey continuing to work hard for the Warriors between the posts had an impressive 8 saves.
" We are looking forward to a long break before our first conference game, to ensure everyone is healthy and ready to go," said Constantini. "This team is capable of great things, we just need to continue to believe that."
