Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Bailey Lewis

Strong Start to the Warrior’s Season

Phillips and Lewis lead the Warriors to Victory

ROCKLIN, Calif. –  The Warriors were ready to show their strength in the first game of the year against Pacific Union. A strong offense had the final score read in Jessup's favor, 102-77.

Head Coach, Lance Von Vogt, shared his thoughts on the game, "I really liked the energy we came out with tonight as well as the way we shared the ball.  We have a lot to clean up as we should at this point in the season, but we can work from what we did here."

The Warriors set the tone immediately by putting up 12 points before Pacific Union could respond. Keith Phillips and Antonio Lewis led the charge for the Warriors in the first half by racking up 14 points and 10 respectively. But it didn't stop there as Phillips and Lewis were also aggressive on defense, stealing and causing turnovers to give the Warriors the advantage. By the end of the first half, the Warriors were up 49-28.

The Warriors lead enabled more substitutions. Von Vogt explained, "Being able to play the entire roster tonight will pay dividends in the future especially for the young guys." Those young guys added to the Warriors score by contributing 44 points off the bench.

The Warriors strong momentum was carried through the second half as they put up 53 more points largely due to the Pioneers 12 turnovers and the Warriors ability to snag eight steals. Garnering 27 of their 102 points off of turnovers, Phillips and Lewis continued their offensive surge to give the Warriors a decisive victory. Phillips tallied 21 points by the final buzzer while Lewis finished with 20. Darrell Polee and Isaiah Milan rounded out the double digit scorers as they each added 10 to the Warrior's score.

Despite the Warrior's strength and strong offense, Pacific Union was still able to force 19 turnovers by Jessup's, "We will really need to clean up the careless turnovers and also make the simple play rather than the difficult play," Von Vogt addressed the discrepancy and was hopeful for future games. "We turn the page to Saturday's game versus West Coast Baptist and I expect us to have cleaned up some of our careless mistakes from tonight."

The Warriors face off against West Coast Baptist College on Saturday, October 27th at 12:00 PM in the Warrior Arena.
