SAN DIMAS, Calif. – The William Jessup Volleyball team played their final game of a two-game road trip to Southern California against Life Pacific College Warriors. Despite a strong and consistent performance, Jessup was unable to pull out the win losing in five sets, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 20-25, and 10-15.
In the first set for Jessup, a pair of kills by
Vendela Williams helped push Jessup out in front 6-2. The lead was short lived and the set would be tied at eleven different moments but Jessup would eventually go on to lose a narrow battle, 25-22.
After the game, head coach
Shasta Millhollin said, "Life Pacific played a very tough match. We continued to fight like crazy despite losing yet another player to an injury in warm-ups."
Jessup was able to duplicate the early success from set one in the second set as they led it 6-2 in the opening moments. Jessup would keep a steady advantage as they were up 18-11 but before a knock-out blow was landed, Life Pacific tied the game up at 23-23. Two attack errors by Life Pacific would prove to be the difference as Jessup won their first set of the match.
In set three Jessup received a boost from
Taylor Tarble as she had a momentous kill giving her team a 10-5 lead.
Michaela Zapata would register a kill late in the set, giving Jessup a ten-point advantage as they were up 19-9. Life Pacific would sneak back into this set late, but Jessup would hang out for the set win, 25-20.
Jessup was down 3-5 in the fourth set but then scored seven unanswered points, taking a 10-5 advantage. Jessup would keep the lead for the majority of the set, leading it late in the frame 18-12. It appeared Jessup was ready to end the match in four sets but Life Pacific would go on a 13-2 scoring run to claim the set, 25-20.
The fifth and final set got off to a rocky start for Jessup as they were down 5-0 to start. Unable to overcome the poor start, Jessup lost the set 15-10.
Williams had a phenomenal performance as she had a team-high 16 kills while also recording a season-high four blocks. Tarble and Zapata also played great on the offensive side of the ball as they tallied 12 and 9 kills respectively.
Kacey Berger and
Madison Pelham each finished the night with three service aces and
Alicia Borges had two of her own.
Brianne Whitt led Jessup in the game with 24 assists while
Taylor Jacky was superb on the defensive side with 18 digs.
With a home game on the horizon for Jessup after five straight road contests, coach Millhollin finished by saying, "Our fighting mentality remains intact, and we plan to continue to build on it."
Jessup will be back in Warrior Arena on October 12 to host San Diego Christian University at 7 PM for the team's annual Breast Cancer Awareness Match.
