Warriors Shine on Day One of Bill Holtz Warrior Classic

Luu changes game momentum to spur the Warriors to victory.

ROCKLIN, Calif. –  After a tight game last Monday, the Warriors were looking for a win in day one of the 12th annual Bill Holtz Warrior Classic. Their first matchup was against Oregon Institute of Technology. After four quarters, the final score read in the Warrior's favor, 72 - 63. The Warriors have a 2-1 record.

"We showed a ton of resolve and toughness tonight to get the win," head coach Kurt Westendorp. "Oregon Tech is perennial power on the west coast, which makes this a really big win!"

The first quarter saw the Warriors putting up a strong fight, as the score fluctuated back and forth. The largest lead in score was only by four points for each team.
Lily Hagerty lead in scoring in the first half with five points. The Warriors used strong passing and hit clutch three-pointers, but at the end of the first half the Owls led, 18-15.

The second quarter saw the Owls pull away a bit, securing a six-point lead for the majority of the quarter. Anisah Smith became instrumental for the warriors, earning six points in the second quarter. By the end of the second quarter, the Warriors trailed, 33-29. The Warriors took advantage of free throws, making 6-6. They also earned 22 rebounds off of which they earned seven points. Smith led in scoring at the half with eight points, followed closely by Hagerty with seven points.

In the third quarter, the Warriors trailed for the majority, but with three minutes left Olivia Luu hit a three to give the Warriors their first lead since the first quarter. Luu's three changed the entire pace of the game. The Warriors pulled ahead on a layup by Luu and a couple free throws by Liz Gehweiler. The last minute had the Warriors clinging onto a one-point margin, and Hagerty got a layup to give the Warriors a wide enough lead. The Warriors ended the quarter with the 52-49 advantage.

Maintaining the lead was the only goal for the Warriors in the last ten minutes. That determination showed in a defensive push and a focus on grabbing rebounds. The Warriors earned a 12 point lead in the fourth quarter, the largest lead for the Warriors of the game. Luu earned 12 points in the second half, 14 overall, most of which came at key moments in the game that changed the momentum in the Warrior's favor. The Warriors held onto until the last second. At the final buzzer, the Warriors won 72-63.

Overall, every Warrior player put in a strong effort, as they earned 24 points off the bench. They utilized turnovers and fast breaks particularly well with 13 forced turnovers, resulting in 12 points. The Warriors stole the ball eight times as opposed to the Owls' two. The Warriors took advantage of rebounds well with 11 points off of rebounds. The Warriors went 21-26 (80.8%) at the free throw line, while the Owls went 24-33 (72.7%).

Four Warriors hit double digits during the game. Anisah Smith led with 17 points, but she was followed closely by Hagerty (15), Luu (14), and Gehweiler (10). Gehweiler led the team with nine rebounds and four assists.

The Warriors play in day two of the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic, November 3, at 8:00 PM against Northwest Christian University.

"Our depth was tested at some key positions tonight and I'm very pleased with how we had contributions up and down the line-up," Westendorp said. "Quick turnaround tomorrow against another nationally recognized program in Northwest Christian.  I'm looking forward to the challenge!"
