Warriors Split at the Bill Holtz Classic

Phillips, Polee, and Lewis give the Warriors the advantage over Northwest Christian

ROCKLIN, Calif. - The Warriors entered day two of the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic with a renewed determination. The red and blue faced off against the Northwest Christian University Beacons and saw that determination pay off as they split the tournament. The final score read 89-76 as the Warriors advance to 2-2 overall.

"I am proud of the guys for how they responded tonight after losing last night," head coach, Lance Von Vogt, reflected on the previous game as the Warriors faced the Beacons.

The first half was dynamic from the tip-off. The Beacons gave the Warriors a run for their money, keeping Jessup shutout for the first five minutes of play until Keith Phillips was able to get in a layup and deliver on a free throw to take the score to 8-3, Beacons advantage. The pressure continued for the majority of the first half as the Beacons defense was able to keep the Warriors offense on their toes. Just 12 of the Warrior's points were scored in the paint in the opening half, while the Beacons were able to secure 14. However, as the Beacons defense increased, so did the Warriors. The Warriors grabbed 25 rebounds in the first half translating to 6 points.

The Beacons had an eight-point lead, but the Warriors were able to come back and get the game to a one-point differential. With a minute left on the clock, Darrell Polee gave Jessup the lead with a layup and Tyras Rattlers Jr. extended it with a three-pointer. At the end of the first half, the Warriors were ahead, 34-30. Phillips led the Warriors in points during the first half with 12 points, nine of which were off of three-pointers.

"I thought we played with much more poise, composure and togetherness which only bodes well for the future of this team," Von Vogt continued. That composure was reflected well going into the second half.

The Warriors made adjustments during the break and were able to maintain their lead as passing and movement increased dramatically.  That movement led to a fairly even spread of points from the Warriors and 14 assists. The change in strategy and emphasis on movement was able to get around Beacon's strong defense on the post. Phillips and Polee, in particular, helped push the Warriors to a 15-point lead with eleven minutes remaining. That lead diminished slightly but held until the end as the Warriors won, 89-76.

Von Vogt was complimentary of his player's tenacity, "It is still early in the season and we are still figuring out where and how to put all of the pieces together, but I like the fight and grit in this group. "

The Warriors had a slow start but overall were able to deliver. Phillips led the team in scoring with 30 points and had 13 rebounds. Polee and Lewis followed suit in terms of scoring with 10 and nine points respectively. The Warriors made 29-67 (43.3%) of their field goals, while the Beacons were 29-73 (39.7%). The Warriors were particularly successful in shooting threes, making 11 in comparison to the Beacons 5. With a total 48 rebounds, Jessup crashed the board which secured 11 points. In spite of only making 12 points in the paint during the first half, the Warriors fought hard and earned 34 points in the end.

Next weekend the Warriors head to Vallejo, Calif. to join in the Cal Maritime Tournament. They play University of St. Katherine on Friday, November 9th, at 5:30 PM, and then Portland Bible College on Saturday, November 10th, at 5:30 PM.
