ROCKLIN, Calif. – The Warriors opened the conference with a win, continuing a program-record win streak, and looked to follow it up with another. The Warriors went up against the Hope International Royals and successfully continued their streak. The Warriors won 64-46 giving them a 9-1 record overall, 2-0 in GSAC.
The first quarter was a tight battle. The Warriors and the Royals went back in forth with the lead, but, with four minutes left, a layup by
Emilee VanDyke gave the Warriors the momentum they needed to pull ahead. By the end of the first 10 minutes, the Warriors had a 15-5 lead.
The second quarter saw the Warriors finding their stride. The Warriors capitalized on rebounds, earning 30 overall, which led to 10 points.
Miranda Zaragoza and
Lily Hagerty were directly responsible for almost half as each grabbed seven rebounds in the first half. The Warriors shot 9-30 in the field, 2-14 from the arch, and 6-6 on free throws during the first half, while the Royals were 5-28 on field goals, 2-11 from the three, and 4-7 for free throws. By the end of the first half, the Warriors led, 26-16.
Olivia Luu led the teams scoring for the first ten minutes.
The first five minutes of the third quarter were quiet until Joelyn Stirton hit a three to get the ball rolling. A minute later, Luu came in and landed a layup off of an assist from
Creonah Bryant and then Luu came back 30 seconds later with a jumper. The rest of the Warriors points from the quarter came from free throws. There were a lot of fouls called in the third quarter on both sides, but the Warriors were able to maintain their lead. The third ended with the Warriors up, 39-29.
Bryant started off the fourth quarter with a bang for the Warriors as she sank a three-pointer 20 seconds in.
Anisah Smith followed Bryant's lead and landed two back to back layups. Three minutes in the Warriors had a 46-31 lead. The Royals defense started to slip in the fourth quarter as the Warriors were able to edge up their lead to a 15-point deficit. That deficit waivered slightly, but the Warriors ended the game victorious, 64-46.
The Warriors had trouble shooting compared to past games. They were 32.2% from the field, with 18.2% on threes, and 84.6% at the charity stripe; Hope saw similar struggles with a 23.6% from the field, a 16.7% on threes, and 76.2% on free throws. Despite that offensive struggle, the Warriors and Royals both had strong defenses. The Warriors picked up 59 rebounds overall, 36 defensive and 23 offensive, while the Royals had 28 overall. Zaragoza accounted for 20 of those rebounds, the most single-game rebounds in program history, while Hagerty grabbed 11. Luu led in scoring with a personal season-high 19 points, while Zaragoza followed with 16 points and Smith had 12.
The Warriors take a one-game break from conference as they travel down to UC Merced and faceoff against the Bobcats on Tuesday, December 4th, at 5:30 PM. Then, it's over to Atherton, California to face Menlo College.
